It’s My Secret to

Chapter Nine – Tagen
I lead my
friends through the back door of Selene’s, the entrance I always use when I’m
heading in to work for the night.
Timeclock
growls when he sees Seto and Mokuba in the group of people with me.
“It’s all
right, Timeclock, Jono and I have both approved them to be here tonight,” says
Pegasus resting a calming hand on Timeclock’s shoulder.
“If you’re
sure, Jono.” Timeclock eyes me up and down trying to see some proof of the
insanity he feels must be clutching my mind.
I don’t
even hesitate for a moment. I just look straight into Timeclock’s eyes and
smile at him so he knows how much I want this. “I’ve never been more sure of
anything in my life, Timeclock,” I say with a wink, “Have you seen Jojo come
in?”
“You know
she always takes the Tunnel,” says Timeclock with a shrug, “Check your dressing
room.”
“Will do!
Thanks, buddy!” I exclaim leading my friends through the back room.
The new
girl rushes by me in tears.
“Jono! Oh,
thank the Gods you’re here! The newbie was just on the main stage and she
killed them!” exclaims Ani rushing up to me, “Please! You have to save them!”
“She killed
them?” I ask with wide eyes. I spin around and shout, “Hey, newbie! You’re
fired! Pack up and ship out!”
“Jono! We
need you to go on stage! I know you’re still on med leave, but this is urgent!”
exclaims Ani, “I’d ask Jojo but I can’t find her!”
“Okay!
Okay, I get it! I’m going on! Ani, could you run to the booth and put in my
songs for me? I’m thinking Burning Desire, Ordinary Girl, Welcome to My Life,”
I say quickly.
“Got it…”
“I’ll have
Jojo join me on Ordinary Girl and we’ll work the tables,” I say nodding my
head. “Yeah, we can do this. I’ll get Jojo.”
“Poor
choice if you’re going to have Jojo join you. You could use the extra firepower
up front if the crowd is actually dead,” says Mako stepping up to set his hand
on my shoulder and stop Ani from leaving with a meaningful look.
“Damn!
You’re right! I totally wasn’t thinking! Mak, could you go to the booth
instead? Ordinary Girl, Space Love, Welcome to My Life. Then run to the light
box and have them put in Jojo’s Super Light Track! Dammit! Why did internal
communications choose this week to go on the fritz?” I say, “Ani! These people
are my special guests. Can you take them to the Gold Room and get them
comfortable, set them up with drinks… anything they want from the bar, make it
something really stiff for the Big Bad CEO, and make sure you turn the screen
on so they can see the Main Stage. I’ve got to get Jojo! And do a super quick
change! I’m still soaked from the bay and totally not up to code!”
“On it!”
exclaims Mako running away behind the stage.
“Follow me
everyone,” says Ani with a curt nod as she starts walking away.
I rush off
hectically towards my dressing room. This will take some interesting work to
make this move happen tonight. I lie down on my bed within the dressing room
and close my eyes. If anyone would come in, they’d think I was asleep. For what
I plan to do tonight, I must leave my body behind. A part of me stands up,
completely solid in appearance even though I’m only a spirit now. I’m also
completely naked, showing off the fact that I have the genitals from both a man
and a woman. This part is going to be the hardest to explain to my friends, but
I’ll manage somehow now that the time is upon us. I take a deep breath and
slide apart, transforming into two spirits instead of just one. I glance at my
body lying down peacefully and smile. I could have left my body as individual spirits,
but it’s a little more tiring to do it that way. Now both of my forms are fully
dressed, one as Jono and the other as Jojo. I… Joey Wheeler no longer exists
because I am both. With the separation of spirits, the me I think I am ceases
to be.
Jono and
Jojo rush out of the dressing room, securing the door closed behind them before
they run to the stage and burst through the curtain together.
“Welcome to
Selene’s!” exclaims Jono loudly before grabbing a microphone headset from a
hand offstage. He slips the headset on. “A round of drinks on the house!”
Jojo grabs
her own headset and slips it on. “Tonight! One night only! Jono and I will
perform for you together, as brother and sister the way it should always be!”
The music
begins immediately, and Jojo jumps onto the table closest to the stage.
Jono starts
into his dance, laying on the charm to full capacity, pulling moves that show
off all the best sexual aspects of his body. “You will go far,” he sings, “with
Kero by your side. You are the one who will find the cards in time…”
Jojo
shimmies her hips and slides her hands across her flat chest.
“She’s just
an ordinary girl in a magical world,” sings Jono, “Now she’s on the trail of
trouble!”
“And the
adventure has just begun,” sings Jojo jumping off her table and shaking her ass
as she moves across the floor.
“Your
powers may grow each time you win, thus you blush head to toe when you catch
sight of her,” sings Jono pulling off his jacket and dropping it to the stage
behind him to reveal more of his firm body as he weaves his web of seduction to
match his twin sister’s dance.
“Fire,
Wind, Lightning, Water,” sings Jojo swinging an arm around one of the
waitresses and pulling her into a brief kiss to the absolute joy of the crowd
who whoops and hollers.
“She’s just
an ordinary girl in a magical world,” sings Jono stepping out onto the floor as
the light show begins, “Now she’s on the trail of trouble!”
The strobe
light spotlights Jono and Jojo, the flashing of the white light making their
slightly sweaty bodies glisten intensely, and their clothing shimmers. The rest
of the people in the club are suddenly engulfed in the flashing multicolored
lights of a different strobe light that moves around the room highlighting
different people.
“One day,
you’ll find your whole life has changed. Act quick, be brave. Your heart will
show you the way,” sings Jono rubbing up against Nico as she carries a tray of
the free drinks into the room.
“And the
adventure has just begun,” sings Jojo climbing onto a table to continue
dancing.
“She’s just
an ordinary girl in a magical world,” sings Jono climbing onto the table with
Jojo and wrapping his arms around her from behind as they move together in a
subtle grinding, “Now she’s on the trail of trouble!”
“Fire,
Wind, Lightning, Water,” sings Jojo.
The music
quickly changes to a different beat and the siblings jump away from each other
onto different tables where the white flashing lights highlight them again as
they dance to please and use their voices to seduce the now happily aroused
patrons.
Ani steps
into the room and gives a thumbs-up to Jono before smiling at him and heading
backstage, the sign to tell the blond boy that his friends are well taken care
of and watching the performance of two supercharged sexual maniacs.
Jono and
Jojo return to the stage as the music shifts again to their final song of the
evening.
The strobe
lights, both the flashing white and the multicolored, train themselves onto the
stage, but the red, yellow, green, blue, and purple lights stay moving across
the outskirts of the stage while the white acts as the spotlight.
“Do you
ever feel like breaking down?” sings Jono ruffling up his hair to make it look
wilder, “Do you ever feel out of place? Like somehow you just don’t belong, and
no one understands you? Do you ever wanna run away? Do you lock yourself in
your room? With the radio on turned up so loud, but no one hears you
screaming?”
“No you
don’t know what it’s like, when nothing feels alright,” sings Jojo rocking her
hips in short pelvic thrusts, “You don’t know what it’s like to be like me…”
“To be
hurt, to feel lost, to be left out in the dark, to be kicked when you’re down,
to feel like you’ve been pushed around,” sings Jono. He moves his hands to
touch his body in very intimate ways, the way his lover would touch him had he
a lover to touch. “To be on the edge of breaking down, but no one’s there to
save you. No you don’t know what it’s like… Welcome to my life!”
“Do you
wanna be somebody else? Are you sick of feeling so left out? Are you desperate
to find something more, before your life is over? Are you stuck inside a world
you hate?” sings Jojo, “Are you sick of everyone around? With the big fake
smiles and stupid lies… While deep inside you’re bleeding!”
Lights play
off their skin, their bodies move enticingly as the music flows through them as
if it were the very blood in their veins, their pure simple life force.
“No you
don’t know what it’s like, when nothing feels alright,” sings Jono, “You don’t
know what it’s like to be like me…”
“To be
hurt, to feel lost, to be left out in the dark, to be kicked when you’re down,
to feel like you’ve been pushed around,” sings Jojo, “To be on the edge of
breaking down, but no one’s there to save you. No you don’t know what it’s
like… Welcome to my life!”
“No one
ever lied straight to your face, and no one ever stabs you in the back. You
might think I’m happy, but I’m not gonna be okay!” sings Jono spinning so his
back is to the audience and they can see the way he moves his hips and butt cheeks
trying to show them his sexual prowess, “Everybody always gave you what you
wanted. You never had to work; it was always there! You don’t know what’s it
like, what it’s like…”
“To be
hurt, to feel lost, to be left out in the dark, to be kicked when you’re down,
to feel like you’ve been pushed around,” sings Jojo dropping to her knees and
rotating her hips as her hands move across her chest, “To be on the edge of
breaking down, but no one’s there to save you. No you don’t know what it’s
like…”
“To be
hurt, to feel lost, to be left out in the dark to be kicked when you’re down,
to feel like you’ve been pushed around. To be on the edge of breaking down, but
no one’s there to save you. No you don’t know what it’s like… Welcome to my
life! Welcome to my life! Welcome to my life!” sing the twins with a final
kneeling bow.

I enter the
Gold Room at Selene’s to find all my friends sitting around the room, stretched
out on chairs or the King sized bed with empty glasses near each and every one.
I look perfect right now in my spare set of black leather pants and hiking
boots. I wear another silver muscle shirt beneath one of my spare trench coats.
I couldn’t look better if I tried, which I didn’t.
Serenity
stands in front of everyone staring at me with shock-filled eyes as the screen
that shows them the video feed from the Main Stage, where I notice He-chan is
now, goes blank. “Joey? Is that what you really do here? Is that how you really
make your money?”
I look at
Serenity with understanding eyes. “Yeah… I sing. I dance. I teach sensuality
and seduction.” I smirk. “And I’m good at it.”
“You looked
like a shameless slut out there,” says Duke.
“So did you
last time I saw you in the audience,” I snap impulsively.
“Where’s
Jojo?” asks Seto without looking at me.
“How did
you… I thought you…” Mokuba bites his lip and doesn’t finish his question. I
know what it is though… How did I magically come up with a second me since I’m
really Jojo and I’m currently dressed as Jono?
“I don’t
want you working here anymore,” says Serenity turning away from me, “There has
to be another way.”
“Yeah,
prostitution!” I shrug. “I couldn’t find another way that paid as good.”
Mokuba
holds out his hand and Serenity moves to sit on the bed beside him, but she
quickly curls up in his arms.
My eyes
rest on Seto, sitting in the middle of the bed and currently staring at me with
emotionless eyes. “Do you really want to know, Seto?”
“What are
you hiding from me?”
I sit down
on a stool placed in perfect view of everyone. “In order to know what’s going
on and how this will all end, you must first know how it began! So let’s start
this little story-book from the beginning.”
Seto’s eyes
bore into me, showing me nothing when all I want is to see some trace of
emotion… love, hatred, forgiveness, betrayal… I don’t care, anything!
Pegasus
gives me a nod of support.
Serenity
smiles at me, as weak as her smile might be after seeing a revelation like
that. I hate having to have showed her that I’m an exotic dancer… exotic dancer
not a stripper. There is a difference, sometimes.
I close my
eyes and tilt my head down.
“You can do
this, Jojo,” whispers Serenity under her breath, “We’ll do it together. I’m
right here.”
I open my
eyes with a fire I didn’t even realize I still had within me. “It all began in
1988. That was the year the twins were born. Joseph and Josephine. Jono and
Jojo for short.”
Serenity
moves out of Mokuba’s arms and sits down on my lap.
I wrap my
arms around Serenity.
“Josephine
was a real surprise. They didn’t know about her until she was born. She was
rather camera shy during the pregnancy,” says Serenity, “She was the second
born twin, so Joseph was actually the oldest. They were inseparable, and they
were always getting into trouble. Our parents’ favorite saying was ‘Jo, no!’
That’s how Joseph got his nickname of Jono. Our mom called Josephine ‘Josie’,
but she always hated it, so we called her Jojo.”
“We lived
not too far from an orphanage,” I say looking over at Seto, “Jono was the first
of us to see the new arrivals, and when Jojo got into trouble, he took the
blame for her.”
“Jono went
away for the summer, and in the meantime, Jojo and I went to welcome the
Shinato brothers,” says Serenity.
Seto
blushes slightly.
“Jojo fell
in love with the older of the two brothers. I know she was only ten, and she
probably didn’t even know the real meaning of love,” I say, “but she loved him
very much, and that was her first mistake. Her second was telling that bitch we
call our mother!”
“She was
giving Jojo a bath when Jojo told her about her feelings,” explains Serenity
sadly, “and our mom tried to drown her.”
“Back on
the docks you said she did!” exclaims Seto angrily.
Finally! He
shows an emotion.
“I know
what I said on the docks. I said the exact same thing before, because that’s
what I saw. That’s what a part of me saw. But Siren said it right the first
time,” I say looking into Seto’s eyes, “She tried to kill Jojo, but Jono
had arrived home that day. He stumbled in on that bitch trying to kill Jojo. He
saved Jojo. He stopped the bitch from killing his sister, but the bitch turned
on him. Jojo was too weak from her near drowning, and she couldn’t return the
favor for Jono. Our mother pushed Jono beneath the water and held him there
even while Jojo was pounding on her back to get her to release him. She killed
Jono. That was the day that Joey Wheeler was born. That entire trauma… I gained
multiple personalities because of those events, but it’s more complicated than
that. Most people with MPS can be treated with psychiatry, and their other
personalities can be sealed away. I’m not so lucky.”
“You see.
Jono was always special, and instead of his spirit going on to the world after
death, he stayed behind,” says Serenity, “He stayed behind to join Jojo in her
body, giving Jojo two personalities in one body, but they decided instead to
amalgamate themselves into one mind… Joey Wheeler.”
“I don’t
understand,” says Yugi, “What happened?”
Serenity
rolls her eyes. “I thought he would at least understand what’s going on… with
having a yami and all.”
“Don’t
worry about it, Siren. I’ll explain it,” I say.
Serenity
climbs from my lap and sits down beside Mokuba again, and he quickly wraps his
arms around her.
Seto stares
into my honey-brown eyes. He’s searching for a clue. He doesn’t realize who I
am yet, and since I just told him that I have a twin, he’s starting to wonder
who he fell for this time around. Yeah, I’d say he’s totally confused.
I look
around the room. “Jojo and Jono used to be twins, but now they have the option
of being more like a hikari and a yami.”
“Who was it
who actually died?” asks Mai. Her eyes show me no signs of what she thinks of
all this, but my heart clenches in pain as I look at her. I think that she
understands this all too well.
“Jono’s body,
but not his mind. Our mother killed Jono, but he had barely taken his last beat
of his heart when his spirit left his frame and entered the one you see now.
Jojo was overwhelmed by her own emotions and having her brother invading her
body and mind. She fell unconscious within her own body, and Jono gained
solitary control. He hadn’t realized that the dead body was his, so he…” I
close my eyes as I feel my heart flutter. “He thought he was looking at Jojo,
and he panicked. He told Siren to go tell our father. Siren did, and that’s the
reason our family broke apart. That bastard of a father let Serenity go live
with a murdering bitch!”
“Are you
okay, Jojo?” asks Serenity.
I shake my
head and run from the room quickly.
“Joey!”
exclaims Serenity starting to run after me.
“Let Joey
go, Serenity,” says Pegasus, “Give…” Any further words he says are lost to my
ears as I block the sound. I don’t care what he says to her.
I enter my
dressing room and change as quickly as I can. I’m amazed at how fast I can do a
change like this. I head back into the Gold Room and receive a number of gasps
for all my efforts.
Mai looks
slightly hurt as she looks at me, comprehension dawning in her eyes, and Seto’s
eyes are wider than I’ve ever seen! They’re bigger than Yugi’s!
I have my
hair smoothed down, my eyes outlined with eyeliner and the lids covered in
shadow, my cheeks tinted with just a touch of rouge, and my red lips a shade
darker than normal thanks in part to the lipstick I wear. A skin-tight, black
tank top accentuates my small, rather frail looking chest. My long legs emerge
from beneath the hem of my too-tight, black leather skirt. The skirt hangs off
my hips to slightly reveal my pelvic bone as well as my navel. I wear elbow
high gloves and knee-high boots with spiked heels, both in black. The collar I
wear is also black with a silver bone-shaped tag dangling from it.
“Jojo!”
gasps Seto staring at me in shock, unable to move even a muscle. I think he may
be beginning to understand what I’ve been saying. Then again… maybe not.
“Hello,
Set,” I say with a small smile. “It’s been awhile. Don’t speak… Just listen,
all of you.”
Seto
watches me as I stand in front of everyone. His eyes show his conflict. He fell
in love with Joey, and now to see the only woman he ever loved again… he
doesn’t know who to be loyal to.
“There are
moments when I think I’m going crazy,” I say quietly. And there are moments
when I know I’m nuts! I touch my collar and find an odd strength in it.
Seto raises
an eyebrow at the bone-shaped tag attached to my collar.
Mako
catches my eyes and he asks me a silent question by looking at Seto.
I smile and
nod my head to Mako.
I look to
Bakura and Marik. “Hey, are your dark sides listening?”
They both
nod.
“What about
Yami?” I ask turning to Yugi to see Yami standing behind him, “Good. Welcome to
my life, everyone! Jono!”
For a
moment, my body blurs and my mind becomes hazy, but then it’s over and a
sixteen-year-old spirit stands beside me. He looks just like me, but his blond
hair is wild and unruly where my blonde locks are smoothed down now. We have
the same honey colored eyes. He wears the outfit I wore just moments before,
the silver shirt beneath the black trench coat with the leather pants. I… I am
really Jojo. I suppose I always have been mostly her since I’ve been in her
body all this time. It’s just always seemed that I was more Jono than Jojo, but
no, being like this with Jono outside of our body and me still within, I
realize that we’ve been equal all along, and I am really Jojo because I’m the
one with everything to hide.
“Jono!
Jojo!” exclaims Serenity with wide eyes, “I didn’t think I would ever see you
two together again! I didn’t think you still had your gift!”
“Shit!” I
exclaim quickly scooping Serenity into my arms, pulling her into a warm
embrace.
“Why the
hell can I see through Jono?” asks Mako staring at him with wide eyes.
Jono coughs
to clear his throat. “You can see through me because I’m a spirit. I don’t have
skin anymore. I was able to keep a solid appearance while I was on stage with
Jojo because she was a spirit too. We left her…”
“Our,” I
correct.
“We left
our body in the dressing room,” says Jono, “and we both went out as spirits
because we could look and even feel solid that way.”
Serenity
sniffles against my chest before moving out of my arms and back into Mokuba’s
embrace.
Jono looks
at me for a second, and I smile at him. He moves over to Seto quickly and
kneels in front of him. “I loved you from the very first moment I set eyes on
you, but back then when I saw you arrive at the orphanage, I didn’t think you
could possibly be as messed up as I was, so when Jojo tarred and feathered old
lady Leary’s cats, I took the blame for her. I knew that she would fall just as
much in love with you as I was, and I just hoped you could love her in return.
I knew she would love you. I just never thought it would end up like this. I am
just as stupid as you’ve always said Joey was. I didn’t know that you were
bisexual.”
Seto’s eyes
narrow at the accusation.
“Do you
understand what’s happened, Seto?” asks Jono.
Seto opens
his mouth to speak.
“Jono,” I
say interrupting Seto before he even has a chance to speak, “Let’s show them
all. If we can use our special gift to show them what happened, they will
understand better what caused this.”
“You think
it still works, Jojo?” asks Jono looking back at me.
“Why
wouldn’t it? The twinsight has never failed us yet,” I reply, “Okay, everyone,
close your eyes and you’ll see a blast from our past.”
Jono pushes
himself away from Seto and moves over to me. He holds up one hand and I quickly
grasp it. We say the word as one, in a manner I’ve only ever known twins to be
able to do, “Twinsight!”
~Flashback~
Young
Mokuba and young Serenity play together on the swing set while young Seto and
young Jojo sit on a bench.
“I feel
so unsure,” sings Jojo along with the music from a small radio, “as I take your
hand and lead you to the dance floor. As the music dies, something in your eyes
calls to mind the silver screen and all it’s sad good-byes.”
Seto
stands up and holds out his hand for Jojo who takes it happily and stands up.
“I’m
never gonna dance again. Guilty feet have got no rhythm. Though it’s easy to
pretend, I know you’re not a fool. I should have known better than to cheat a
friend and waste a chance that I’ve been given, so I’m never gonna dance again
the way I danced with you,” sings Jojo starting to dance with Seto, “Time can
never mend the careless whispers of a good friend. To the heart and mind,
ignorance is kind. There’s no comfort in the truth. Pain is all you’ll find!”
Seto
starts to blush as he pulls Jojo closer so that their bodies press together as
they dance.
“I’m
never gonna dance again. Guilty feet have got no rhythm. Though it’s easy to
pretend, I know you’re not a fool. I should have known better than to cheat a
friend and waste a chance that I’ve been given, so I’m never gonna dance again
the way I danced with you! Never without your love,” sings Jojo, “Tonight the
music seems so loud. I wish that we could lose this crowd! Maybe it’s better
this way. We’d hurt each other with the things we want to say. We could have
been so good together. We could have lived this dance forever but now who’s
gonna dance with me? Please stay!”
Jojo and
Seto separate from each other and dance wildly to the music with an awkward
rhythm. Both of them use dance moves that have never been heard of before and
make them look completely foolish, but neither one cares nor does either one
laugh.
“And I’m
never gonna dance again,” sings Jojo pulling Seto back into her arms and into
their previous dance rhythm. “Guilty feet have got no rhythm. Though it’s easy
to pretend, I know you’re not a fool. I should have known better than to cheat
a friend and waste a chance that I’ve been given, so I’m never gonna dance
again the way I danced with you. Now that you’re gone. Now that you’re gone.
Now that you’re gone, was what I did so wrong, so wrong that you had to leave
me alone?”
“I would
never leave you alone like that, Jojo,” says Seto blushing slightly.
Jojo
blushes as she presses her lips against Seto’s for the first time ever. “I love
you, Set.”
“I… I… I
love you, Jojo,” says Seto now sporting a full blush.
“We’ll
see you tomorrow. We have to go home now,” says Jojo sliding away from Seto,
“Come on, Siren! Time to go home!”
Serenity
whines as she gets off the swing. “See you tomorrow, Mokie! Bye, Set!”
Serenity
and Jojo walk off together and enter their family home.
“So…
what are they like?” asks young Jono staring out the window at the two dark-haired
boys who enter the orphanage building.
“Jono!”
exclaims Serenity hugging him happily.
“They
are wonderful,” says Jojo blushing as she too embraces her brother, her twin.
“I love Set. We have a connection.”
“I
know,” whispers Jono, “I love him too. I hope he loves you back.”
Jojo
nods.
Jono
smiles.
Time
flies to carry away the early evening, and Jojo sits in the bathtub with her
auburn haired mother washing her hair.
“You
play with those orphans a lot,” says Mrs. Wheeler.
“Yes.
I’ve fallen in love with one of them,” says Jojo.
Mrs.
Wheeler’s green eyes widen. “You what? You can’t fall in love! It’s forbidden!
Your marriage has already been arranged, and I won’t have you screwing it up
because you think you love somebody!”
“I’m not
marrying someone I don’t know over someone I love!” exclaims Jojo.
Mrs.
Wheeler forces Jojo down beneath the water.
Jojo
struggles to free herself.
The door
opens after a long moment, and Jono stands in the doorway with frightened eyes.
“Mommy, Jojo’s scared!”
Mrs.
Wheeler doesn’t even look at Jono.
Jono
gasps. He runs over and jumps on Mrs. Wheeler’s back.
Mrs.
Wheeler releases Jojo, and Jono grabs her to pull her from the tub.
Jojo
gasps and sputters on the tile floor as she empties the water from her lungs.
Mrs.
Wheeler grabs Jono by his shirt collar and pushes him under the water. “You
stupid little shit!”
Jojo
pushes herself up and starts hitting Mrs. Wheeler in the back, which results in
her getting slapped back into the wall.
Jono
stops struggling a moment later. The water ripples, and he climbs from the tub
almost invisible. He doesn’t even notice that his mother doesn’t see him. He
sees Jojo lying naked and seemingly dead on the floor, and he moves to her. He
reaches out a hand to shake her awake, but he’s pulled within her body.
On a
microscopic level, Jojo and Jono, both spirits, grab hands and pull each other
into an embrace that melds them into one, a spirit that is neither male nor
female for it has the genitalia of both. “Siren…”
Serenity
peaks her head through the door and moves to grab the towel and wrap it around
her sister before pulling her out into the hall where they huddle against the
wall. “Jojo, what happened?”
“Mommy
killed Jojo! Mommy killed Jojo!” The newly formed mind of Joey cries and
clutches tightly to Serenity. It shakes its head and gasps before trying to
push Serenity away. “Go! Tell daddy! Mommy killed Jojo! Mommy killed Jojo!”
Serenity
runs from the room and pulls their blond haired father back to the hall outside
the bathroom. “Honest, daddy! Mommy killed Jojo!”
Mr.
Wheeler pulls Joey to his chest. “Joseph, what happened?”
Joey
looks up into Mr. Wheeler’s brown eyes. “Daddy! Mommy killed Jojo! Mommy killed
Jojo!”
“It’s
okay, Jono,” says Mr. Wheeler, “I’ll take care of everything, okay? Just you
wait here. Serenity… stay here with him. I’ll be back soon.”
Serenity
crawls into Joey’s arms as soon as their father vacates them.
Joey
brushes a tear from its face. “Siren, we can’t stay here,” it hisses urgently,
“We have to leave! We have to go far away where even the hounds of hell can’t
track us! We can’t stay with them! They’ll kill us too!”
“Yes,
Jo! We’ll leave together…”
“Shh…
Siren, listen!” Joey exclaims.
Serenity
nods.
Through
the open doorway into the bathroom, the two children watch Mr. Wheeler punch
Mrs. Wheeler in the face. “You killed Jojo? What the hell were you thinking?”
“Jojo?
Does that look like Jojo? I was trying to kill Jojo, but the stupid bitch got
away!” exclaims Mrs. Wheeler angrily as she points to the body covered in the
bathwater.
Mr.
Wheeler’s eyes flare with anger. “You killed Jono? You killed Jono? What the
fuck were you thinking? Of all those god-forsaken kids, you had to kill him!
You know how fucking important he is! Why did you kill him bitch? You could
have killed that worthless bitch, Serenity! Or the worthless mutt, Jojo! Why
did you have to kill Jono? And why did that little shit lie to me about you
killing Jojo! I’ll beat her to within an inch of her life when I catch her!”
“Don’t
you dare,” exclaims Mrs. Wheeler glaring at her husband. She turns her gaze
towards the door and the two pairs of brown eyes peering in. “Killing that slut
is my pleasure!”
“Like
fucking hell!” exclaims Mr. Wheeler, “That fucking worthless mutt might be
stupid and weak, but if I can train her properly, she might be able to stand in
Jono’s place! You wanted out of this joke of a marriage! Now you’ve found your
ticket! Get out! Get out and take that worthless bitch with you!”

Flashback~
Jono and I
release our hands and the spiritual movie, which had played out in front of
everyone’s eyes albeit closed or open, fades away. “That’s how Joey came to be.
Joey is the amalgamation of us both.”
“You’re not
worthless, Siren,” says Mokuba holding Serenity tightly as she cries at the
memory.
Everyone
looks at Jono and I in shock.
“That
night, we moved away so we didn’t even get the chance to say goodbye to Seto
and Mokuba. Not long after, only a month or so if my memory serves me
correctly, Mom took Siren away, and Dad took us… Joey away. We moved to
different places,” says Jono.
“That was
also when the abuse started. Dad was so pissed because Jono was the one who
died. He started drinking, and beating on Joey. Me, I guess, it’s still
officially my body… it being female and all,” I say, “By the end of the year,
he’d started raping Joey too, but he was so fucked up in the head by the booze
that he no longer remembered Jojo at all. He thought Joey was a boy, and he
raped him accordingly.”
Seto’s eyes
widen suddenly and he stands up angrily. “What? You mean he’s been raping you
that long?”
I nod. I
close my eyes as tears start to fall. I told you, Seto… I told you that I was
my father’s whore, and I have been for as long as I can remember.
Seto fumes
silently as he tries to think of a way to kill my father without getting
caught. He slowly sits back down on the bed beside Mokuba.
“I’m
getting weak, Jojo,” says Jono.
I nod and
pull Jono into an embrace that he uses to seep back into my body, and I gasp as
his mind rejoins my own.
“Two
spirits, one body… sounds rather familiar, doesn’t it, Yami?” asks Yugi smiling
at his darker half.
“Very
familiar, but they don’t have a Millennium Item, and Jono isn’t thousands of
years old,” says Yami.
“Neither is
my dark side!” exclaims Marik, “He’s only six!”
“But you
created him from your psychosis,” says Bakura, “Jono wasn’t created.”
“True,”
says Marik, “So there are a few differences between our situations. I created
my dark side. The other two darks came from Ancient Egypt, and Jono was a ghost
who refused to leave and became some sort of strange poltergeist possessing
Jojo’s body.”
“We prefer
to call them Homeless Spirits, or Homeless for short,” says Serenity. “I’ve
dealt with it before a little. I helped a ghost move on to the world beyond.”
All eyes
turn to me as I gasp in pain.
“Joey?”
asks Seto.
I look down
at myself. I’m see-through. I turn to look beside me, and I see the shock on
Jono’s face.
“I thought
we were trying to become Joey again!” exclaims Jono patting down his solid
body, “What am I doing in here and you doing out there?”
I blush.
Play innocent. “I don’t know. Maybe you should ask Seto what’s going on. He’s
smart enough to know.”
Jono swats
at me before moving to Seto. “I should ask you…”
“Ask me
what?” asks Seto glaring at Jono.
“There’s
something I’ve wanted to do since I first saw you, but I never could before…
not until now.” Jono pulls Seto into an open-mouth kiss.
I blush and
try not to gawk at the two boys making out. I sit down on the stool before all
my friends who are either staring blatantly at Seto and Jono kissing or looking
at me awkwardly wondering how this revelation will change our relationships. I
hardly ever go out of my body in spirit form, but I’ve always had the ability.
I take a deep breath while Jono kisses Seto, and I try not to let my tears
form… much less fall. It saddens me to see my brother kissing my love, even
though I know that Jono was the one to love him first, most, and best. I’m even
giving him permission to use my body to kiss Seto, but it still tears at my
heart to have Seto kissing anyone else.
Seto pushes
Jono away from him. “What the hell was that for?”
“For the
sake of love,” replies Jono.
I take a
shaky breath, hardly a noticeable gesture, but Jono spins towards me rapidly.
“Shit. Now
I’ve hurt her,” whispers Jono staring at me, “I thought she was giving me
permission…”
Serenity
moves to Seto and whispers into his ear, “Joey wanted you to decide.”
“Decide
what?” whispers Seto as Jono moves over to stand beside me and look at me
sadly.
“Which one
will remain? You loved Jojo once, and you love Joey now. Well, Joey is mostly
Jono with some aspects of Jojo. Jojo has always thought that more of Jono went
into Joey than herself,” whispers Serenity, “You get to decide which one you
could love most, Jono in a woman’s body, or Jojo in her own. They can’t be
split personalities within a single body, so you can either love one or the
other, or you could love them both as a whole, but the decision is up to you.”
“What
happens if I want one but not both?” whispers Seto.
“Then the
other one will leave the body forever and go to the world after death,”
whispers Serenity as her eyes start tearing up.
“Joey,”
says Seto evenly.
Jono and I
both look towards Seto. We blink, both having heard his entire conversation
with our sister, but not understanding what he means now. “Yes?”
“I don’t
want to talk to you two! I want to talk to Joey! Jojo, get your ass back in
there with Jono so that I can talk to Joey!” yells Seto.
No sense
making him madder. I grab Jono’s hand quickly and pull myself back into our
shared body. After a second, I look at Seto fiercely and snap, “What the hell
do you want, moneybags? It’s not often that we actually get to see each other!
The strain on our minds from being separate from a body is too painful!”
Seto grabs
my arm and pulls me out of the room. He slams me against the door after closing
it and hisses into my ear, “Who the hell do you think you are? Which one of you
was it that made me fall in love with you?”
“I don’t
know,” I whisper meekly, “We both love you. We’ve always loved you, and you
will be the only person in the world we ever will love.”
“What does
Serenity mean that you want me to choose which one of you lives and which one
dies?” hisses Seto.
“Well…” I
blush. “I thought you might want to choose your lover. You can’t choose the
body because it’s female, but if you would prefer it be male, we could go
through a sex change operation to accommodate you. If you want Jono, you can
have him. If you want Jojo, you can have her.”
“What if I
fell in love with the amalgamation and wouldn’t love the individuals?”
“You could
have that too,” I whisper.
“What if I
wanted Jono and Jojo separately? If I wanted two lovers?” whispers Seto,
“Couldn’t I have Jono with me at school, Jojo with me afterwards, and Joey in
my bed?”
I nod. “You
can have whatever you want… if you even still want me…”
Seto slams
his fist into the wall beside my head before opening the door and flinging me
back into the room. He storms in after me and slams the door shut. “Stupid
mutt! This changes nothing!”
“It changes
everything!” I exclaim picking myself up off the floor. “I’m in love with you,
you stupid bastard! I always have been, and I always will be! But I’m not… I’m
nothing… Nothing at all.”
“Joey!”
exclaims Serenity as I fall to my knees.
“Joey?”
asks Mokuba quickly moving to my side and pulling me into an embrace. He glares
at Seto. “What did you say to Joey?”
“Nothing.
Nothing at all,” says Seto.
“So what
happens now?” asks Yugi quietly.
I take a
deep breath. “We go on pretending this never happened! Jono and Jojo Wheels are
performers at Selene’s! That’s all they are! They don’t exist anymore other
than that!”
“That’s not
true, and you know it, Joey,” says Yugi. “They are still very much alive and a
very big part of you. We can’t pretend that this didn’t happen, because the
fact is it did!” He moves to hug me. “I love you, Joey! You’re my best friend,
male or female doesn’t matter to me!”
“Um… can I
have my brother back, Yugi?” asks Serenity. She blushes. “Dammit, this could
take some getting used to. Could I have my sister back please, Yugi?”
Yugi
blushes as he moves away from me.
“Yes,
Siren. You can!” I exclaim standing up with Mokuba, “You get to see your big
brother at school, and your big sister at home after school!”
Mokuba
glares at Seto expectantly. He walks over to Seto and hisses quietly, “Well…
what are you waiting for?”
Seto raises
an eyebrow at Mokuba.
“Tell Joey
you love him… her… them,” whispers Mokuba.
“Come on!
We have a tournament to finish!” exclaims Seto leaving the room angrily.
“Don’t mind
him, Joey. He’s just upset that he didn’t realize you are Jojo,” says Mokuba,
“He used to look for her everywhere… before he finally realized he’d fallen for
you.”
“I hope you
will forgive Odion and I,” says Ishizu speaking to both me and Yugi, “but we
came to Domino for more than just the tournament. We are assisting the museum
with a few… items.”
“Hey, if
you have to go, don’t let me stop you!” I exclaim.
“That’s
right,” says Yugi, “You have work, and we understand that!” He smiles at
Ishizu. “Thank you for coming! It was great to see you again! Come by the game
shop if you have time. We’ll have tea.”
“Good luck
in the tournament,” says Odion, “Defeat Kaiba. He’s being a…” He blushes as he
says a word in Egyptian.
“I don’t
know what that means, but I agree,” says Serenity.
“How do we
get out of here?” asks Ishizu opening the door.
“I’ll show
you the way,” says Mako, “I know my way around this club.”
“Thanks,
Mak! Are you performing tomorrow night?” I ask.
“I think
I’ll take the night off, if it’s all the same to you, Selene,” says Mako
turning to look at Pegasus.
“That’s
quite all right,” says Pegasus, “I wasn’t expecting either of you back until
the next day anyway.”
“How about
we do a set together, Mak?” I ask.
“Let’s
choose a new song instead of the usual, but I’m totally in with you.” Mako
nods. “See you at work, Jojo!”
“See you at
work, Mak!”
“Don’t be
late for work, Jojo,” says Pegasus walking out with Mako to be followed by
Ishizu and Odion.
Duke looks
back and forth from the doorway to me. “Mako works here? Pegasus is your boss?”
“Pegasus
owns the club. He calls himself Selene when he’s here. He always wears a mask.
He likes it,” I explain, “Mako sings and acts as a bouncer. He’s no good at
teaching like I am.”
“What do
you teach?” asks Solomon looking at me with worried eyes.
“Just
sensuality and seduction,” I say.
“We should
go as well, Rebecca,” says Arthur, “We might be able to get an earlier flight
back to Egypt.”
“Okay,
grandfather!” exclaims Rebecca, “Good luck, Yugi!”
“Write
often, Rebecca!” exclaims Yugi smiling at her as Rebecca hugs him quickly.
We all head
from the club and make our way in different directions. My closest friends
return to the hotel with me.
I head up
to the roof while everyone else goes to his or her room. I sit down on the duel
platform.
“Do you
expect me to be happy about this?” asks Kaiba glaring at my back.
“I don’t
expect anything from you. I never did,” I say quietly.
“What did
you think would happen after we dueled each other? We made a bet that we would…
we would be together after our duel,” says Seto moving to sit beside me. He
sighs. “What did you think would happen then?”
“I knew
that I would have told you I was Jojo and female before that happened. I knew
that we might not make it into each other’s bed,” I say tugging on the hem of
my skirt to lower it, “I was ready to accept that you might not want me as
female. Now it’s up to you. I will not hold it against you if you want to go
back on our bet.”
Seto pulls
me into his arms. “I can’t just stop loving you like that, Joey!”
I wrap my
arms around Seto. “I’ll always love you.”
Seto pushes
me away from him and stares into my eyes.
My heart
clenches.
“Duel me!
Right here. Right now!” exclaims Kaiba.
“Not now… I
don’t have my deck,” I say, “It’s in my trench coat downstairs.”
“Go get it.
Then we’ll duel!” exclaims Kaiba.
I stand up
and hurry away from Kaiba. I head down the stairs and hurry to my room to grab
my deck. I smile hopefully at Mokuba and Serenity who sit on the bed playing
video games together. I take my trench coat into the bathroom and close the
door. I pull off the tank top and slide my arms into the trench coat. I fasten
one button to keep the coat closed over my under-developed chest. Then I head
from the bathroom and up to the roof again. I walk up to Kaiba and notice him
blushing slightly from the change in my appearance. “I’m ready to duel.”
Kaiba
stands. “Let’s duel.”
We take our
positions.
“Is this a
part of the tournament?” I ask.
“Yes. If
you lose to me, you’re one step closer to being out of the tournament
completely,” says Kaiba.
“I don’t
intend to lose this duel!” I exclaim.
“Believe me…
you will!” exclaims Kaiba.
I roll my
eyes. “Just make your move already!”
Kaiba
smirks as we both draw our hands.
I draw all
the right cards at exactly the right times, but my luck is against me. When I
need a high roll of the dice, I get low. When I need a low roll, I get high,
and for every move I make, Kaiba has something bigger and better already
waiting for me.
“Blue-Eyes
Ultimate Dragon… attack.” Kaiba smirks.
I turn away
as the last of my life points vanish with the single attack.
“Come with
me, mutt!” exclaims Kaiba, and he grabs my wrist to drag me to the elevator
with him. Before I know it, he’s flinging me onto the floor in his room. “Are
you hungry?”
“I’m always
hungry,” I say.
“I’ll order
room service,” says Seto moving to the phone.
I wait
until after Seto hangs up before I whisper, “What do you think of all this?”
“Think of
what?” replies Seto.
“Me…
female… Jojo,” I whisper, “You must… feel something. Hurt, betrayed… I don’t
know.”
“Do you
remember what I told you?” asks Seto looking at me.
“You’ve
said a lot of things to me, and I remember every one, but would you be a bit
more specific on which one I should be remembering?” I ask.
“You are
stupid!”
I nod my
head. “I am stupid…”
Seto
smirks.
The
knocking on the door prevents Seto from saying anything.
“Get the
door, mutt!”
I get up
from the floor and move to the door. I swing it open and smile at the young
woman from room service. “Hi!”
“Room
service for Mr. Kaiba,” says the woman cheerfully.
“Just set
it on the bed,” says Seto.
The woman
carries the covered tray over to the bed and sets it down gently. She looks at
Seto. “Is there anything else for you, sir?”
“No, that’s
all,” says Seto.
“Have a
good evening, sir!” The woman leaves, and I close the door behind her.
“Let’s
eat,” says Seto moving over to the tray.
I walk up
to Seto. “Are you going to order me around all night?”
“You’re my
dog! You will obey my commands!” exclaims Seto, “We had a bet, remember!”
“That was
about sex!”
“So is
this!” Seto lifts the lid. “Eat up.”
I lift a
piece of fruit and stick it into my mouth. I watch Seto all the time while we
eat, and the entire time, I can’t help but think that I’ve ruined everything
with him.
