Chapter Eight
The sound of fighting reached the three male’s ears later that afternoon and as they went to investigate, they could see Rose shaking a necklace at Adrianna. “Uh, Rosie, how many times do I need to tell you that my wife isn’t a demon?” Adam questioned with a light tone.
“She’s trying to get me to agree to two cakes.” Rose answered, her eyes holding entertainment. “The old lady’s in on it too.”
Kaiba found himself smiling, finding the scene almost too humorous. The Rose that he knew in bed was the real Rose and that timid woman that appeared in front of the cameras… that was just a lie. She wasn’t afraid to do what she felt was best or to say what she thought, she just hated the spotlight. “One cake, Mamma.” Adam said with a soft chuckle.
“Fine,” the old woman agreed. “What kind?”
“Chocolate.” Rose informed her.
Annoyance flashed in the old woman’s eyes for a moment before she threw a rolling pin at her daughter’s head. “Pick that up,” said the old woman when Rose had ducked to avoid getting hit.
“Mamma, you really shouldn’t throw things at Rose.” Tom said as he picked the rolling pin up. “She was just saying what the three of us want.”
“It wouldn’t kill her to let you two speak for yourselves for once. I swear, you two are always letting your sister do all the talking for you. It’s no wonder why she hasn’t been married yet.”
Rose rolled her eyes before sticking her index and middle fingers in her mouth, jerking her head backwards. “Mamma, she doesn’t always speak for us.” Adam informed his mother. “If she did, you wouldn’t have Adrianna as your daughter-in-law.”
Kaiba was silent as he took Rose into his arms, wanting to touch her. “Hey, are you guys going out?” Rose questioned.
“Yeah. I don’t know where they plan on taking me, but they’re taking me somewhere.”
Rose shrugged slightly before answering, “You’ll come back, don’t worry. While you’re gone, can you guys pick me up some stuff?”
The two gray-eyed men cracked up, both clearly amused. “She’s already getting you to do her errands for her, dude.” Tom laughed.
“What’cha talking ‘bout? I’m making you two do it cause you know where to go.” Rose informed her brothers.
“What the hell?!”
“Do you want your present this year or not?” Rose threatened. “Just cause it’s our birthday don’t mean that I’m obligated to be nice.”
“Yes, we want our present.”
“Then you’ll get the damn herbs and whatnot!”
Adrianna made a noise of pure distain before asking, “Then what colors would you three like to be on the cake, since you’re so adamant about having only one cake.”
“Blue” “Purple.”
The three siblings looked at each other for a moment before Tom grinned. “Seriously? We could do that?” Tom questioned.
“Sure, I mean, you know they’re going to call a professional anyway.”
“It would be nice since this is the first birthday we’ve had together in about four years.” Rose confirmed. “Plus, every year after they’ve stopped putting kid cartoons on our cakes they have always done something that reflects us.”
The two males nodded in agreement, clearly pleased. “We formally request a picture of a sunset on the cake.” Tom said with a grin.
Adrianna looked at the three for a moment before asking, “Why?”
“Hello? The sunset’s going to represent the ending of chaos. Well, it’s supposed to but as long as I’m alive and kicking, there’s always going to be chaos somewhere.”
“I shouldn’t have asked.”
“No, you should have not!”
Kaiba looked at his lover for a moment before seeing an almost desperate look in her eyes. “Are you okay?” Kaiba questioned softly.
“Yeah, I was just thinking about going to town to pick up a few things.” Rose said with a smile. “I’d really appreciate it if you guys picked up the stuff I need since I really don’t want to have to leave tomorrow morning just to go get it.”
The brown-haired man nodded slightly in understanding before brushing his lips against the woman’s. He was amazed at how easy it was becoming to kiss the woman or show some form of affection in front of her family. It was because they were so open with their emotions, he supposed, and how easily they joked about things that would make any other human being squirm. “Hey!” Rose called as the three males left the house. “Don’t forget to book the fucking strippers!”
“ROSE!”
“She was kidding about the strippers, right?” Kaiba questioned as Adam pulled out of the driveway.
“Somewhat joking. When we turned eighteen, Vati booked male and female strippers for our party.” Tom laughed. “Now that one of us is married and another one of us is in a relationship, the odds of having another stripper party is rather slim.”
Kaiba nodded slightly in understanding, making a note to remember to try something when they got back to Domino City. “I didn’t realize that you three were triplets.” Kaiba admitted finally.
Tom and Adam both laughed, clearly enjoying it. “Yeah, not many do. With Tommy-boy and me, you’d actually think that we’re twins.” Adam laughed. “Most people assume that Rose was a single-born.”
“Who’s oldest out of you three? I mean, who was born first?”
“Rose,” answered both males.
“I came next,” Adam informed the brunette. “Tom came last.”
“Your parents must have had been busy after you three were born.”
Both males shrugged slightly before Tom answered, “We entertained ourselves. Then we found out that I like guys and since we went to a small town, not many people were thrilled. Adam started looking at military options and once Duel Monsters came out, Rose jumped at that. Fucking bitch was good.”
“So I’ve heard. Why didn’t she just buy more cards?” Kaiba questioned.
Adam shrugged slightly before answering, “Her ex liked to beat her and every time she tried to get new cards, they’d end up burned. The bastard thought that by telling a woman that they’re stupid or ugly, they’d stop fighting. Rose did for a while, but then one day she seemed to wake up. Called us up and asked us to come get her. We found her sitting in a restaurant just covered in blood and bruises.”
“Not his.”
“Nope, hers. As soon as she healed up, she couldn’t book it fast enough.” Tom’s voice was bitter. “This is the first time in nearly three years that she’s been home.”
Kaiba had never enjoyed the mall scene, but he knew that he couldn’t keep away from it forever. Almost immediately, the two men pulled him into a shop that appeared to have an assortment of things up for sale. “What is this place?” Kaiba questioned, raising an eyebrow.
“One of the few places your psycho girlfriend is willing to go.” Adam answered as he looked through a few scarves. “Hey, what’cha think Rose would do if I got her a scarf?”
“You want to give her one while she’s sleeping in the same room as Seto?” Tom questioned before looking thoughtful for a moment.
Adam swung at his brother, disgust showing on his face. “That’s our sister you’re daydreaming about, you sicko!” Adam scolded.
Tom laughed before answering, “I like guys, big brother. Last time I checked, our sister wasn’t a guy and there was a perfectly good looking guy on camera,” he paused for a moment. “Before the chickens got introduced to camera pieces and the tape was burned.”
Now he understood why Rose was so understanding of other people’s sexual preferences. With one brother that preferred men and another that preferred women, Kaiba would have been surprised if she had been homophobic to begin with. “Wrong family to have dislikes.” Adam explained. “We’ve got relatives with different ethnicities and all of that good stuff. Of course, if I were you, I’d keep the pants on.”
“Thanks.”
Kaiba fell silent as he looked around, pausing when he saw a bunch of cards. “Ah, a Duelist.” The cashier said with a pleased look. “May I interest you in anything?”
“Yeah, best in the state. Last guy she brought home burned her cards in a successful way to make her feel like shit. Never dueled again.” Adam said with a frown. “You can always tell a man by his cards. Our Rose was a spell caster type of woman. How about you?”
“I’m looking for some spell-caster cards for my,” he paused for a moment, “girlfriend. Her birthday’s coming up and I want to get her something nice.”
The cashier raised an eyebrow, inspecting Kaiba carefully for a moment. “Dude, you could do so much better. Buy your girlfriend some earrings or something.”
“She doesn’t like jewelry. Her brothers say that she dueled a few years ago and I want to buy her some cards.” Kaiba informed the cashier with a frown.
“Well, if that’s the case, then I think we can find something. Spell-caster type, right?”
“Yes.”
“Well, as you can clearly see, we have an excellent selection.”
“Dude, that’s got to be the fastest he’s ever pulled out those damn cards.” Tom chuckled when they left the store ten minutes later. “No wonder our Rose is attracted to you.”
Kaiba looked at the man for a moment before shrugging. He was personally content with his present to Rose and he found that he couldn’t wait to see her face. “She won’t get mad if I give these to her, will she?” Kaiba questioned.
“She’d probably start bawling and calling you an asshole or something before she thanks you.” Adam answered with a small shrug. “One year, she punched us both for giving her that damn necklace.”
“The nineteen dollar one?”
“Yeah, that one. Took one look at it, put it on, then punched us before giving us each a kiss on the nose. From what we’ve seen, she still hasn’t taken it off.”
Kaiba shook his head a little before answering, “She’s rather partial to that necklace. I offered to buy her a new necklace and she got upset.”
“Idiot,” both males commented.
Within a couple of hours their shopping was done and their purchases put in the trunk. Half an hour later, they came back to the house to find Rose yelling at a tall man that had cool dark eyes. “What in the hell are you doing here, you son of a bitch?!” Adam shouted when Rose had gotten slapped, getting out of the car and slamming the door shut behind him.
The man stepped back, anger showing in his eyes. “This isn’t over yet, you bitch. Not by a long shot.” The man snarled as he backed towards his car.
Rose glared at him before running in the house and within minutes, coming back out with her father’s gun. “Don’t you ever fucking hit me!” Rose shouted before firing the gun at the man’s car as he took off.
Kaiba and Tom got out of the car, quickly going over to the shaking woman. “What happened?” Kaiba questioned when he saw Mokuba.
“We were washing the pickup when that guy suddenly showed up. He started yelling at Rose, saying that she was nothing without him.” Mokuba said, clearly shaken. “Rose threatened to press charges and then he threatened to kill her.”
“Where is Mamma and Vati?” Tom questioned.
“Adrianna took them and the kids into town for some groceries.” Mokuba answered. “I didn’t want to go so Rose and I decided that we were going to get some chores done.”
Kaiba pulled his brother into a hug, watching Rose closely. Tom had managed to get the gun away from her while Adam comforted the woman. “Rosie, let’s get that taken care of.” Adam said gently.
Rose shook her head, clinging to her brother’s shirt tightly. “I didn’t want to come back home.” Rose said starting to cry. “I knew that someone would tell him. I could go all over the world and someone would still tell him where I was.”
Adam closed his eyes as he softly stroked his sister’s hair, trying to soothe her. “Adrianna told him that you had come home, didn’t she?” Adam questioned patiently.
Slowly, Rose nodded. Kaiba felt hate grow towards Adam’s wife, having the feeling that she felt that the man was honorable. “She does know what happened, doesn’t she?” Kaiba questioned, unable to keep the anger from his voice.
“She refuses to believe it.” Tom explained. “Adrianna’s always believe that she knows who is best for Rose.”
Kaiba was silent as Rose turned to him, her eyes glistening with tears. He pressed his lips against her cheek, whispering soft words to her. “He won’t touch you again,” whispered Kaiba. “If he does, I’ll see to it that he never bothers you again.”
