Drabble 9: Inheritance
Jounouchi sighed sadly as he placed the last box in the living room. Things were moving so fast he hardly had time to understand what had happened exactly. It had only been two days and yet it seemed like hours since the funeral and reading of the will. He’d been so shocked by the news that he wasn’t sure it was real or not yet. Maybe it was just a nightmare and he hadn’t woken up. The blond glanced around the completely furnished room and bit his lip when he saw a picture on a small side table.
‘Or not.’ He thought to himself.
“Fuck... Imma miss ya so much.” He whispered as he picked up the picture. His fingertips gently traced over the face of the woman in the picture with a longing of lost opportunities. Maybe if he’d called her more or come to visit she wouldn’t have left him behind. They would have been together in a few days anyway, but now he was here to stay and all alone.
“Hey Jou, I got the kitchen items unpacked and Yugi said he’s almost done with the bathroom and bedroom… Jou?” The voice didn’t snap him out of his melancholy mood and he bit his lip harder as a tear threatened to slip past his lashes. He felt a hand on his shoulder and set the picture down.
“Sorry Yami. I guess I just… I mean… Fuck, I miss her! I appreciate yous guys helpin’ me out an’ all, but it still feels so raw fer me. I can’t believe I’m livin’ here where she was livin’ just a coupla days ago. I mean… Fuck, this is unreal! I haven’t even gotten ta mourn her an here I am movin’ inta her place, usin’ her furniture, an’ gettin’ her hard earned cash into my bank account. This just feels so… wrong on so many levels…” A hand squeezed his shoulder and he turned to face his long time friend.
“We know Jou, but this is what she wanted. Remember the video at the will reading you told us about? She made sure to have everything taken care of at her young age in case this happened. I’m sure you will get to mourn her in time. We’ll come hang out after work if you want tomorrow. I know Shizuka will stop by later today. She’s worried about you too.”
Jounouchi sighed and pulled his friend into a tight hug, one that was quickly returned. “I know, I know! It’s… hard.” Another pair of arms wrapped around the both of them and Jou was quick to pull Yugi in. “You guys are the best!”
“Hello? Excuse me but your door is wide open. I think I have a little friend who’s eager to be home.” At the strange voice from the front of the house, the three friends parted and went to see what the fuss was about.
“Hi, you have something for me?” The blond smiled and noticed the small carrier the male had at his side.
“I do if you are Jounouchi Katsuya. My name is Daisuke and I work at Domino Safe Haven. Your little friend here was a bit of a handful, but I think he must have just missed a familiar face.” The man paused for a moment and gave him a sincerely sad expression. “I am very sorry for your loss. Kisara helped out at the shelter a couple times a month. I can’t believe she’s gone, but I hope that her best buddy here will be alright. He seems really upset too.” After thanking the man and showing Daisuke his ID, he took the small cage and put it on the table in the living room. He closed and locked the front door and sat down with his friends on the couch staring at the carrier.
“Aren’t you going to let him out?” Yugi asked after a moment of silence.
“Not sure if I should til’ I’m done packin’. I don’t want ‘im hiding in a box or gettin’ hurt by accident.” Jou pressed the palms of his hands into his eyes. Why they had to deliver the animal right this second he’d never know, but according to Kisara’s video he should have known he didn’t have much of a choice. He could still hear her voice, so cheery in the video even though she would never laugh or smile or hug him again.
“Hi everyone. I know that if you’re watching this then I’m not here anymore. I have no idea what happened to me, but I hope that you aren’t mourning me too much. I lived my life how I wanted to and I was happy. Isn’t that right, precious?” Kisara cooed off camera. A slim siamese cat leaped into view and landed gracefully into her lap. She pet him a few times until he curled up and fell asleep.
“I won’t make this very long. I ask that the following people stay and the rest to leave… Oh, except the lawyer. He has the paperwork.” She chuckled and cleared her throat. “Jounouchi Katsuya, Kawai Shizuka, Sano Momoji, and Mukami Nato. Please don’t be too upset, but I don’t feel I have much to be given out anyway. I’ll wait for you to leave.” The lawyer paused the video and waited for the other people in the room to leave. Once they were gone, he started the video back up.
“To Nato, my dear friend, I leave my coin collection. I know you treasure them as much as I. After all, you were the one who got me started! Please take good care of them. Fujiyo-san has the key to the bank box they’re in.” The video was paused again as Fujiyo-san grabbed the needed information and handed it off to Mukami Nato. With a bow he left, wiping away a few tears. The video resumed.
“Momo-chan! I am going to miss you! You get to take my manga and anime collections. Yes, even the dolls. I put them in a small storage unit for safe keeping. I hope they bring you as much joy and laughs as they did me.” Kisara leaned closer to the camera and cupped her mouth as if to secretly whisper something, “I finished my Watase-san collection too!” She whispered and then giggled loudly, making the cat meow in a whine. It snapped her out of her laughter.
“Sorry my blue eyes. I’ll be serious.” Here it was paused again as an openly weeping girl walked up to the lawyer and accepted an envelope with the details she needed. With a wail of Kisara’s name she bolted out of the room. Shizuka hugged Jounouchi close as she wept.
“Hi Shi-chan. I know we didn’t get to do much. You and I are just a little too far apart in age to have much fun together. Even so, I couldn’t not leave something for you. I’m not sure if you’ll like it, but Kat told me you like pretty things. I have a large trunk for you full of jewelry and cutesy stuffed animals. I have the costume jewelry on top and the expensive stuff at the very bottom of it. I hope you enjoy it… Just don’t let your mom try to sell it. It is yours and not hers. I want to look down from heaven and see you wearing it as you grow older. Love you little cuz.” Jounouchi was stone faced, he’d been that way since receiving the news, and hugged his sister close.
“Now for Kat. I want to talk to you alone for a few. It’s urgent. Fujiyo-san will help Shi-Chan while we talk.” Her smile and shining blue eyes froze on the screen. He barely felt the small kiss Shizuka placed on his cheek as she left him alone. The lawyer handed him the remote and escorted Shizuka from the room.
“What the hell happened Sara?” He asked her frozen image. “We made plans to hang out and then you just…” Jounouchi, shock turning into anger, hit the play button. She shifted on her couch for a moment, looking like she’d been caught doing something she shouldn’t have. After a few minutes of silence Jou was about to hit fast forward when the cat in her lap hissed at the TV, it’s eyes looking right into his.
“I’m sorry Katsuya. I’m sorry for dying and putting you through this sorrow. I know things were just looking up for you… You graduated and got a scholarship. You just decided what college you wanted to attend and…” Kisara’s eyes filled with tears as she paused. His heart clenched painfully in his chest.
“If it wasn’t for you I’d never a made it! Ya made school make more sense…” Jou told the TV.
“That’s not true. I may have helped you a little, but you were the one who did the hard work. Please give yourself some credit.” For a moment the blond broke out in goosebumps. Her chuckle didn’t make them go away either.
“I know you too well, Kat. Don’t freak out on me. I know you don’t like ghost stuff… Thing is… I’m leaving you everything else. You get my house, my car, every penny I have in the bank, and more that you will find out later. My funeral was all paid for and Fujiyo-san too. I know we didn’t talk about money, but… let’s just say you will be taken care of for a long time.”
“Wha… Kisara…” Jounouchi was floored. He wouldn’t have to worry about paying for college? He now had a home and a car? He just had a falling out with his dad and had a few days to get out. He’d been planning on moving in with his favorite cousin, but now he’d be alone.
“Katsuya…” He heard her sigh and look guilty, “There is a bit of a catch. I hate to say it that way, but I need you to promise me that you will take care of my precious blue eyes.” The cat in her lap gave a small hiss and growled. She scratched behind his ear until he purred. The expression on her face was peaceful.
“Seto, I know you and Jou haven’t always gotten along, but you need him and he needs you. I know this and somewhere, deep down, you know this too. Be kind to him.” She spoke to the cat who looked at her with a bored glare. Her own blue eyes glanced up. She bit her lip and a look of fear flashed across her once gentle features.
“Kat… Hirutani’s in the hall. This,” she hugged Seto for a quick second, “Baby Dragon hasn’t hatched yet, but he needs your Time Wizard to work his magic... In order for such magic to work, you need to use your Ra given talent... Don’t be afraid of the graveyard. The answer lies in the center cross.” Her gaze grew pleading. “Do you promise me? Promise to take care of him, guard him, and do what must be done? Do you promise?”
“Of course I do,” Jou didn’t hesitate, “He may be a pussy and a royal pain in da ass, but I’ll take care of the little shit head.” She remained pleading with him for another moment when she closed her eyes and put her hands together as if in prayer. Once she began to speak the words, Jou followed her example and followed her movements.
“Blood of my blood, kin of my kin, the power that binds…” Kisara began.
“Is always within. The tie of our bond grows stronger still...” Jou added, their voices almost becoming one.
“Great is the power, greater is the will… The promise is made from sunrise to set… Against all the odds I haven’t yet met… The promise I make and hereby agree, is between us and the powers that be.” Together they spoke, sounding like a duet, in perfect sync. He could almost feel her aura surrounding him and a few tears leaked from behind his closed eyes. He took a deep breath in and out, not seeing that Seto had latched onto Kisara’s hand and broken the skin. When he opened his eyes and looked up he could see Seto lovingly lick his cousin’s hand.
“Thank you Jou. Don’t forget what I’ve said. You’ll hear my voice.” Tears fell from her bright blue orbs and landed on the siamese cat’s head. He let out a whine of protest.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I left you. Please, hurry home. Seto will meet you there. He needs you.” Kisara reached out and shut the camera off. At the sound of the white noise, Jou turned off the TV and finally broke down in loud sobs.
Jou was so focused on remembering the funeral, he missed Yugi calling his name. A small shake on his arm snapped him back to attention. He lifted one palm to glance at his worried buddy.
“Sorry Yuug. What was that?” Yami lifted his hand towards his lover. It wouldn’t do to pry at this moment.
“Well, I finished unpacking the kitchen supplies and the groceries. You’re fully stocked.” Yami smiled sadly at his friend and changed the subject. He only wished he could do more than simply help the blond unpack. Yugi took the hint.
“I went ahead and unpacked your clothes. I put your jackets in the closet and clothes in the dresser. I also broke down the boxes and put away the few miscellaneous things you had. All that’s left are the boxes you brought in here and the DVD rack we need to set up. If we work together you’ll be done quickly.” Yugi smiled and started opening the boxes. He was quickly organizing the DVDs and separating them from the few books that got mixed into the box. Yami patted Jou on the shoulder and started on the rack. The blond smiled and pulled his hands away from his eyes.
“Thanks guys.” He reached out and took the books, placing them amongst the books his cousin had in her bookcase. There was just enough room to fit his small collection. Sadly, he didn’t own much and they had barely been there an hour and already he was unpacked. It was hard for him to face it and soon his sister would be stopping by. A heavy weight on his heart had him feeling that even gravity was against him.
“Mer… Arroo.”
“I think it’ll be ok to let him out Jou. May I?” Yami asked and reached to unlatch the door to the carrier.
“That’s fine, just be careful with him. He’s a temperamental little brat and he’s known to scratch strangers.” Jou warned as he walked down the hall to close his bedroom door. He didn’t want the blue eyed terror to get into his room.
Yami tried not to be nervous when he opened the door. He slowly stuck his hand in, keeping it limp, and watched the cat’s body language. The siamese gave his hand a sniff and stared at the crimson eyed male reaching out to him. They both stared until the cat leaned his head down for a pet. Yami slowly smiled and scratched under the tanned chin. He received a purr.
“He seems very calm to me. He let me pet him.”
“Well aren’t you lucky? The first time I met him he clawed da hell outta me! He always keeps his eyes on me. Sometimes I feel like he’s lookin’ inta my soul. Seto really creeps me the fuck out.” Jounouchi shivered as he saw the cat stick his head out of the carrier. Yugi, done with his task, turned to look at the animal.
“Oh wow! He’s a siamese cat! They are so pretty. Grandpa’s allergic so we can’t have a cat.” He reached out to pet Seto and, to the blond’s annoyance, was also allowed to touch him. “He does seem really mellow.”
“Mer.” Seto chirped and sat proudly. Jounouchi rolled his eyes.
“He’s only lettin’ ya ta make me look stupid.” Jou stepped closer and reached out his hand. He was surprised when the cat didn’t hiss or swipe at him. It sat there and stared. When the blond’s hand was close enough, the blue eyed feline took a sniff. Jou yanked his hand back quickly.
“Don’t be mean Jou! Look, you made him nervous!” Yugi scolded and scratched behind a brown ear, smiling when he received a purr in response.
“Him nervous! He was about to scratch me!” His friend’s both frowned at him and, with a very heavy sigh, Jou reached his hand out a second time. Seto sniffed his hand, much slower than before, and leaned his face closer. A blush of excitement crossed the blond’s cheeks and he scratched under the cat’s chin.
“Wow… He’s never… ever let me touch him before. I thought he hated me.” He cupped the cat’s cheek and rubbed one of the brown ears. A brown paw slowly rose and rested on Jou’s wrist while Seto turned his face further into the caresses. Just when Jounouchi relaxed, grinning happily from ear to ear, Seto opened his mouth and sank his sharp teeth into his new owner’s hand. Both of his paws wrapped around the human’s arm and held on tight, biting further.
“OW! You little asshole! What da fuck ya bite me for? Leggo!” Jou growled in pain. He yanked his hand back and took the cat with him. A good hard wiggle and he dislodged the cat’s grip. Seto landed gracefully and bolted down the hallway and straight into the room that was Kisara’s.
“Fucker! I’d skin ya alive if it weren’t for Sara makin’ me promise! Shit, I’m bleedin’! Ya see? Bastard tried ta take a piece a me!” He held out his hand for his friend’s to inspect, but Yugi was already heading for the bathroom for the first aid kit. He returned a few minutes later and started to tend to the small puncture wounds.
“He just seemed so relaxed with us. I’m sorry Jou. If you know you can’t get along with him, why did you agree to take care of him?” Yugi asked while Yami took the carrier into Kisara’s room. He found Seto sitting up in the center of the bed. Watching the feline, he set the carrier down and jumped at the loud yowl that erupted from such a small creature. It was pathetic and mournful.
“He was part of the whole package, remember? It was eitha take care of the asshole or be homeless. If the sounds he’s makin’ are any indication, he misses her too. I don’t know how I’m goin’ ta take good care of him if he won’t warm up ta me. Imma keep tryin’ though. I owe her that much.” With his hand bandaged he picked out a comedy movie and relaxed with his friends. Towards the end of the movie, Shizuka stopped by with a couple of pizzas. The rest of the day and into the evening was relaxing and fun. Jounouchi hung out with his friends and sister and was glad that Seto remained in Kisara’s room. The yowling had stopped halfway through the movie and if he wasn’t still mad about the bite, he might have checked on the poor creature.
“I’ll come visit next weekend, big brother. I love you.” Shizuka gave him a kiss on the cheek and headed out towards the bus after refusing a ride.
“We’ll call you with a time for tomorrow, ok? If you need anything, just call us.” Yami smiled and gave his friend a hug. Yugi hugged him next, tighter than the rest.
“Anytime for anything, Jou. I don’t care if it’s three a.m. and you need toilet paper. Call us. We’re here for you always.”
“Thanks bud, but I’ll be ok.” Waving goodbye, he closed and locked the door. With a heavy sigh he turned around and stopped dead in his tracks. Seto was perched on the back of the couch, his piercing blue eyes staring deep into the golden honey orbs of Jou. The blond didn’t move, barely breathed, as he felt something pass over and through him. He saw nothing except the deep shades of blue. It was almost as if Kisara had hugged him, but as quickly as the sensation started, it ended. The haughty gaze glanced away as Seto licked a paw clean.
“Why did I ever agree ta this?” Jounouchi asked the cat. “If we can’t get along I don’t know what I’ll do. Can we call a truce? Please?” Seto just jumped down and trotted away. The blond rubbed the back of his neck and put on another movie. Despite the antics on the large screen, his heart wasn’t in it. Slowly, tears came and fell away. He didn’t stop them.
“Kat… Hirutani’s in the hall.” Kisara’s voice whispered in his mind.
“There is danger near.” He whispered to no one. “No… danger is really close… Maybe… close enough to hurt me at any time.” The teen shook his head and rubbed his temples. He’d told Kisara all about his former gang leader and how he almost didn’t escape. He still slept with a knife and a bat nearby, just in case. He always feared he’d wake up and Hirutani would be right there, waiting to hurt him, maybe even kill him. Ignoring the feeling of dread in his gut, he pushed onto the next clue.
“This Baby Dragon hasn’t hatched yet, but he needs your Time Wizard to work his magic.”
“Seto needs to be protected all the time from the danger. What did she mean by hatched and magic though?” He asked himself. He knew the second she mentioned Hirutani’s name that she was trying to tell him something, something she wanted only him to know. She gave him plenty of clues and a few others that he’d figure out in no time. Or so he thought.
“In order for such magic to work, you need to use your Ra given talent.” She continued in his mind.
“My Ra given talent, huh? Ya always said I had a big heart, but I still don’t get what ya mean.” He grumbled and thought about the last few things she said.
“Don’t be afraid of the graveyard. The answer lies in the center cross… Do you promise me? Promise to take care of him, guard him, and do what must be done? Do you promise?” She sounded so desperate.
“She knows I’m terrified of graveyards and the center cro…” He got to his feet and quickly headed for Kisara’s room. He ignored the ever watching cat curled up on her bed and yanked open her closet. Inside was a small altar. He’d seen it once before, but he never got to ask her what it was all about. He knew his cousin had a few strange beliefs, but he still loved her to death and he knew she’d never sacrifice anything. How bad could the altar be? He looked up and on the top of the altar was a large cross. Jou reached out to touch the center, when he realized the cross was taped over in that same spot. He carefully peeled off the tape only to find a cassette tape wedged inside.
“Meeeerowww.” Seto growled and hissed from the bed. Jounouchi quickly shut the door and left in a rush.
“Kisara… What did ya get yourself into? Why are ya leavin’ me clues like some weird game? I just… Damn it I’m alone… Ya tol’ me ya wouldn’t let me be alone!” Not wanting to go to his room yet, Jou fell onto the couch and cried. He sobbed into a pillow and beat a fist into the cushion. Nothing had happened the way it was supposed to. He was supposed to move in to save up money for his own place. He was going to go to school and come home to someone who was actually happy to see him instead of cruel insults and demands for rent. He was supposed to turn himself around and here he was. He now owned a nice house and a car. He had more money and assets than he could keep track of, but what did it matter if he was all alone? His sister was still in highschool and he knew their mother would never allow her to move in. All his friends were going their own ways and had lovers or plans. Jounouchi was simply being left behind.
“You were da one person I really looked up ta an now ya ain’t here…” More tears cascaded down his cheeks. It went on for over an hour before he cried himself to sleep. Unbeknownst to the slumbering blond, a small creature left the familiarity of his previous owner’s room and headed to the living room. It sat and watched him sleep for a few minutes before reaching out a paw. Slowly that paw became a human hand.
“I still say you are too young… but it can’t be helped now. The sooner you pick up where… Kisara… left off, the better. I’ll need you to be strong… I need to be strong.” A few tears slipped past the blue orbs and he quickly rubbed them away. Kisara was his friend, his protector and guardian, but she was no more. What he needed was the sleeping blond.
“When I am free, I promise that you won’t ever be alone… Katsuya.” Seto brushed his fingers over the flesh of the blond’s arm. There was a strong electrical jolt that shot up his fingers. He yanked his hand away in shock. Apparently the blond felt the jolt as well and shivered in his sleep, mumbling that he wanted to rest for a few minutes more.
“Your power… I thought…” Seto stared. Kisara’s blood was where her power was, but when he completed the bond by tasting the teen’s blood, he could barely taste any power. This was unusual and exciting at the same time.
Feeling weak after such a difficult ordeal, Seto changed back into his cursed cat form. He effortlessly leaped onto the arm of the antique couch, above the blond’s head. He tapped his paw a few times on three different knots in the wooden frame. A soft click meant the secret compartment opened along the bottom of the frame. He jumped down and pawed at the small book the compartment revealed until he got it free. His teeth bit into the old familiar leather and he dragged it closer to where his new guardian might see it upon waking.
Seto trotted back to the compartment and, though it took more effort than he would acknowledge to himself, closed it. Pleased with his work his eyes shifted back to the sleeping blond. He would need energy and food to help prepare his guardian for the road ahead. He refused to settle for that slop company’s claimed were healthy for cats. He was not your average individual and refused to be treated like some wayward stray when he was far more than that. He leaped back up onto the couch and nuzzled against the boy’s chin. Golden eyes slowly opened and though they were glazed with sleep, they were reflecting a shine of brilliant power.
“S’to?” Jounouchi whispered. “Sorry… um not Sara…” He reached out his bandaged hand and pet the cat. When it didn’t scamper off or try to attack him, he smiled. “Always wanted ya ta… like me…” His eyes closed and was instantly asleep.
Seto frowned. Well, as much as a cat could frown, and cuddled up to the blond’s stomach. He felt a heavy arm curl around him, but didn’t mind. Right now their loss was too great and he would need a way to heal the pain his new protector incurred. He only hoped the people pursuing him had followed the fake trail he and Kisara had left before she died. Slowly, he fell asleep, but always with one eye open.

Author’s note: This is the end of part one, but I promise there is more to come for this one. Just what did Kisara mean with her clues? What does she want Jou to know, to find out? Who is after Seto and why the hell is he a cat? Maybe you’ll find out next time!
