smint45: I thought a nice sweet moment was about due. Yes, Kaiba’s “nightmare” just had to be written. Lol
Relmara: Thank you, thank you! Ooh, goodness. I hate dental work of any kind. And yes, I’m not a huge fan of Teá, either. Any stories where she’s chasing after Yami, I’m like “Guuurl. You better back off before Yugi gets you.”Tellnoone_Noonetells: Hehe Thanks. I’m glad to see another reader hooked.Author’s Note: Hello, my readers & reviewers! Sorry that it’s been a while since I’ve updated the story. I started the Puppyshipping ABC’s and my muse jumped over there for quite a spell. CHAPTER NINEThe first week back to school was stressful, both for Seto and Joey. Seto discovered Joey had started taking half a pill instead of the full dose for the sleeping pill. This meant he had to set an alarm to wake himself up before Joey woke up. This left him tired and more snappish in the mornings. Friday morning, he decided to say Fuck It and go back to sleep in his own room.It worked out because Joey wasn’t going to school. At least not at first. His father was due in court today and Joey vowed to be there in the courtroom every time. He wanted his father to know he wasn’t afraid of him and he wasn’t going anywhere. So Yugi and Yami were picking him up in Grandfather’s car to take him to the courtroom. In fact, they were due to arrive in a few minutes. Seto was looking over Mokuba’s homework while Mokuba chattered away happily to Joey. The blonde teen ate his breakfast in silence. Him and Kaiba had been getting along okay lately, but Joey had noticed the “mood swings” and kept his distance.“Mokuba, look at this problem again,” Seto told him, handing the papers back. The two brothers looked over the papers together, putting Joey out of conversation. A quick glance at Kaiba’s mug told Joey it was near empty. Figuring Kaiba would want more, Joey quietly stood up and disappeared into the kitchen. He located the coffee pot and went straight to the cupboard he knew held the mugs.He pulled down one of the bigger mugs before pouring coffee into it. He added a little bit of creamer and stirred it. Joey knew he had been here too long when he knew how Kaiba liked his coffee. Walking carefully and slowly, Joey walked back out to the dining room. The two Kaiba’s were still bent over the paperwork when he slid the fresh coffee mug beside Kaiba. He put the near empty mug on top of his empty plate and took them to the kitchen.Instead of going to the dining room, Joey went down to his room and snatched up his bag. It was quite a bit lighter since his books were in his locker. The mini iPad still weighed down the backpack, but that wasn’t too bad. He carried it out and went to wait for Yugi and Yami. He was surprised to meet Kaiba and his best friends in the entrance hall.“Ready to go, Joey?” Yugi asked, smiling.Yami took the backpack from Joey without prompting; they had grown accustomed to carrying it for him. Joey cracked a big grin.“Yea. I got a full breakfast and Gabe packed me a good lunch. Ya guys sure you don’t mind dropping me off?” Joey asked. The two nodded. They assured Joey it was no trouble. It didn’t hurt that the courthouse wasn’t far from school. Joey nodded his head to Seto in parting and started to follow his friends out.“Wheeler.”Yugi and Yami kept on, but Joey paused. He glanced over his shoulder. Seto gave a little smirk.“Thanks for the coffee.”Joey nodded and turned back around to walk away. He made sure to close the door behind him before climbing in the backseat. He buckled his seat belt before Yami kicked it into drive and pulled out. Yugi waited until they were off the property and on the road to turn around in his seat.“Joey, if I say something about Kaiba, you won’t be offended, right?” Yugi asked.Joey frowned. Why would Yugi be worried about him saying something about Kaiba? Much as he crushed on the guy, he didn’t have any rights to get offended over something Yugi said.“Nah, Yug. Go for it, man.”“Kaiba looks like Hell!” Yugi blurted out.Yami snickered in the front seat at his lover’s bluntness. Joey’s eyebrows rose up before lowering while he mumbled a curse.“Damn. I thought it was just me.” Sigh. “I don’t know why. I’ve been distancing myself lately, thinking maybe having me in the house is stressful.”Yugi shrugged.“Maybe he’s working on a project or something. Why don’t you ask Mokuba?” Yugi suggested.Joey nodded.“Yea. I might just do that.”Meanwhile, back at the mansion, a sleep-deprived Seto was crawling under his covers. His head was throbbing from breakfast. It wasn’t from his sleep deprivation or from checking Mokuba’s homework over breakfast. No, it had been what Mokuba had said after Joey left the dining room the second and final time.“Seto, why were you in bed with Joey?”Seto released a small dry chuckle as he rubbed at his face. It had been unfortunate that he had been taking a sip of his coffee at the time. His eyes had gotten watery as he choked the hot liquid down. Mokuba had immediately jumped to his feet and gently patted his brother on the back. When he had calmed the coughing down, Seto had managed to question his brother on his question.“I woke up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water from the kitchen. I stopped by Joey’s room to make sure he was okay. I didn’t know you and Joey slept together.”His face had turned bright red and, for the first time in his life, Seto had been unsure of what to say. After a few minutes of silence, Seto had motioned Mokuba to sit down. He figured the best approach was the direct. He had told Mokuba about Joey’s nightmares and Seto’s desire to not see the blonde in even more pain. It was his plan to stop “sleeping” with the blonde when his ribs and back were better. Or when he stopped taking the sleeping pill altogether.“Does Joey know? About the nightmares?”Seto shook his head.“He hasn’t shown any awareness.”Mokuba grimaced.“What are the nightmares about?”“I don’t know about all of them. But the ones I’ve heard him mumble were about his father.”“Bastard.”For once, Seto hadn’t admonished his younger brother about his language. He was in total agreement. Seto told Mokuba that Joey wasn’t aware of him helping him through his nightmares. Mokuba had understood and said he wouldn’t say anything to the older teen. With those thoughts circling around in his head, Seto tried to relax and get some sleep./……/
The first day had not gone over too badly. They had reviewed over the charges and had their opening arguments in front of the jury. During his opening argument, the District Attorney had pointed him out in the galley. Joey had been glad Kaiba’s personal lawyer, Mr. Langley, sat there with him. The man had vowed to be by Joey’s side whenever he was in court.
The other man, the Defense Attorney for his father, had been a surprise. Lou was an old friend of his father’s. They had been pals for a long time. The man was real friendly. So how could he be defending a scumbag like Wheeler Senior? And his dad.Wow. That was all he could think when looking at his old man. The man was wearing a suit, had obviously showered, and was clean cut. It was the best image his dad had put further since…well, Joey couldn’t remember the last time his dad had looked so put together. When they were done, the courtroom emptied out. Joey walked out between the District Attorney and Mr. Langley, not giving his dad a chance to even come near him let alone initiate a conversation. He mentioned to the D.A. about the relation between his father and his attorney. The D.A. frowned as they stopped in the lobby.“That’s very interesting. What about you? Does he have any personal connection to you?” the D.A. asked.“I went on a couple of fishing trips when I was younger. Before my dad really started slapping me around,” Joey answered.“What are you thinking, Tom?” Mr. Langley asked.“I’m thinking new lawyer, but I’ll have to look into it,” the D.A. answered.Joey stood listening, waiting. When the D.A. started to leave, Joey spoke.“Hey, Mr. Stahl.”The D.A. turned back to face him. Joey confessed to him about the incident with his father being just outside his restraining order distance at the restaurant.“For every time you notice he does that, I want you to call the department. If he does it enough times, I may have to add stalking to the list of charges. Or, if he violates the order, he can enjoy our accommodations during the trial,” Mr. Stahl told him.Joey nodded. That’s what he figured. Joey looked at his watch. It was near lunch time; not for him and Kaiba, but for Mokuba. Not really wanting to go to his own school today, Joey asked Mr. Langley for a ride. The lawyer helped him sneak out a side door so the press didn’t see him. They reached the school in no time. When Mokuba was called down to the office, the poor boy was completely lost, especially after he saw Joey. After he told him why he was there, Mokuba threw his arms around him in a big hug. Classmates had had parents come and join them for lunch, but Seto had never come over for him. They went out to under a tree and sat under it with their lunches.“How was court this morning, Joey?” Mokuba asked, opening his bento box.Joey shrugged.“It was all right, I guess. Hey, ya mind if I ask ya a question about your brother?” Joey asked, picking up a piece of chicken and popping it in his mouth.Mokuba chewed his mouthful and swallowed before nodding.“Sure. What do you want to know?” Mokuba asked.“Is he…working on some big project or got a big meeting coming up?” Joey asked.Mokuba ran the Kaiba Corp schedule through his head. There was a big project in place, but it was only its beginning stages. There were no big meetings for the next few weeks. In response, he shook his head.“No. Nothing big is really going on at work. Why do you ask, Joey?” Mokuba replied.Joey tried to think of a delicate way to say what he wanted to say.“Well, uh, to put it bluntly, your brother has looked like a train wreck lately. And he’s been hitting the coffee pretty hard the last few days,” Joey said.“It’s because of you.”Mokuba’s eyes shot open wide and a hand slapped over his traitorous mouth. Joey dropped his fork and his head snapped to the side. Mokuba’s reaction to what he had said told Joey he hadn’t been hearing things.“Me? Kaiba looks like unholy Hell…because of me?” Joey asked.Mokuba slowly took his hand down. He put his things down in his lap before showing Joey a sad smile.“I wasn’t supposed to say anything, Joey. Big brother didn’t want you to know. He figured you didn’t know what you were doing so he wasn’t going to say anything,” Mokuba confessed.Joey didn’t get it. What had he done? Kaiba seemed to be okay with him, but maybe that all been an act.“Do you know when it started?” Joey questioned.Mokuba shrugged.“I think maybe the day you came to live at the mansion.”Joey couldn’t believe it. He had disrupted Kaiba’s life before but never to this extent. Him being at the house was obviously stressing the brunette out and that’s not what he wanted. He didn’t want to stress Kaiba out so badly that he was losing sleep over it.They lapsed into silence after that as they finished lunch. The bell soon rang and Mokuba had to go back to class. He hugged Joey around his middle, but made sure not to hug him too tight. When Mokuba left, Joey slowly packed his things up.Kaiba looks like Hell…because of me? Guy didn’t even want me in his home and here I am wrecking his life, Joey thought. He carefully swung his backpack onto his back and headed for the street. He went to a bus stop and hopped on. He flashed a badge at the bus driver that indicated he was allowed to be out of school. Joey chose a seat at the very back of the near empty bus. As he stared out the window, Joey leaned his head on one hand while the other gently clutched the card locket.Joey never liked being a burden. It’s one of the reasons he had never said anything to his friends about his father. As smart as he was, he didn’t like to burden anyone. He slipped his cell phone out of his pocket; Yugi had given him a spare cell to use. He called up the Game Shop and the phone was picked up after the third ring.“Hey Gramps. Yea, it’s me. Nah, I’m…I’m good. Court was fine. I came over and had lunch with the kid. Don’t think Kaiba’s ever come over to have lunch with him. Umm…he’s kinda the reason I’m calling.”/……/
Seto arrived home later than he had intended. It was after dinner and close to Mokuba’s bed time. Even on Friday nights, he expected his brother in bed at a certain time. He stopped by the kitchen and asked the Chef to fix him up something. He went upstairs and stashed his laptop in his room. Then he went to his brother’s room.
The young boy was sitting in a bean bag chair on the floor with a game controller in hand. A quick glance at the large television revealed that Mokuba was playing a competitor’s game.“Why are you playing this filth?” Seto demanded.Mokuba chuckled before pausing the game. He held up a spiral notebook with notes written on the paper.“It’s research, Seto. If we expect to put out a great game, we need to know what’s good about the competitor games,” Mokuba explained.Seto rolled his eyes. It was a sound plan.“Hey, Seto.”“Yes?”Seto was surprised when Mokuba hesitated to speak. His brother had never been hesitant with him.“Do you think maybe you could come have lunch with me sometime? At school, I mean,” Mokuba said, timidly.Seto frowned. This was a first. His brother had plenty of meals with him and he knew he was at school at the same time as him. Then again, Seto had special permission that he could check out at any time and easily go have lunch with his brother.“You never asked before. What brought this on, ‘kuba?” Seto asked.“After court, Joey came and had lunch with me. It was really nice.”Seto had to bite his tongue to keep from saying something in front of his brother. He might have known the blonde had done something. It was about time he had a face-to-face chat with the younger male.“That was nice of him, ‘kuba. Maybe in a couple of weeks, I’ll come have lunch with you,” Seto told him.Mokuba left him flabbergasted when he jumped to his feet and threw his arms around him. All he had said was that he would see about having lunch with him at school. Had he been so remiss in his duties as an older brother that something as simple as lunch together brought him such joy? He returned the hug and patted his brother on his back. He talked a little longer with his brother, mostly asking him about his day at school. When he left his younger brother, Seto went down to the kitchen. The Chef had left a plate for him sitting in the microwave to keep it hot. He took it out and sat down at the island. As he ate, Seto tried to figure out what he wanted and needed to say to Joey. When he was done, Seto put the plate away in the sink and went in search of the blonde. Most evenings around this time, Seto would find the blonde in library upstairs or the living room downstairs. He knew already that the blonde wasn’t in the library, as he hadn’t seen any light in there when he went past. He checked the living room, but didn’t find him there. It wasn’t too late so Seto figured Joey was probably in his room. He knew the full moon was out tonight so Joey wouldn’t be outside stargazing.Seto knocked on the guest room door.“Wheeler, we need to talk.”He wasn’t too surprised when he didn’t get a response. Seto twisted the doorknob, pushed the door and went inside. He was, however, surprised to find the room completely barren. The bed was made and everything seemed to be in order. It was downright eerie.“Wheeler?” Seto called.Still no answer. Seto checked the bathroom and found everything was clean. The bathroom and closet were completely barren of Joey’s things. Had Joey moved his things to another room? But that didn’t make sense seeing as Mokuba had had this room specially designed for the blonde duelist.Seto walked out of the bathroom and spotted something he hadn’t seen before. Sitting on the bed was an envelope marked with his name. He flicked it open and pulled out a letter.Kaiba,Sorry I’ve been so much trouble. Guess I forgot how stressful the life of a teenage CEO can be. I grabbed my stuff and I’m out of your hair. I’ll keep away at school and I’ll pay you back for the lawyer when I can. Thanks for letting me stay for a little bit.
Joey
Seto weighed the envelope in his arm and realized it was heavy. He tipped it down and his card locket slid down into his open hand. Now he knew for sure that Wheeler hadn’t intended on coming back. And that pissed him off.If he thinks I’m going to let him leave like that, he’s got another thing coming to him, Seto thought. He dropped the letter on the bed with a look of disgust. Seto secured his card locket around his neck before departing the room. He stormed back upstairs and to his brother’s room. Mokuba looked up when his brother came in without even knocking.“Mokuba, have you seen Wheeler? Since lunch?” Seto demanded.Mokuba slowly shook his head.“No. Why?” Mokuba asked.Seto turned away with a snarl.“I’ll tell you later. I’m going out. Don’t stay up late.”Mokuba scrambled to his feet as his brother stormed back out. He slid to a stop in his doorway.“Where are you going?” he called after his brother.“To grab a dog!” Seto shouted over his shoulder, throwing his arms up in frustration.Mokuba was now thoroughly confused. His brother hated pets. Plus where he was going to get a dog at ten o’clock at night?/……/
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!Yami stumbled down the stairs to the back door. He cursed when he stubbed his toe on the door. He turned on the outside light and unlocked the front. He opened the door and looked up. Yami jumped back when a pair of glowing dark blue eyes burned a hole into him.“Kaiba? Do you have any idea what time it is?” Yami hissed.“I don’t have time for manners or patience, Yami. Where is he?” Seto growled.Yami leaned against the open door with a sleepy yawn.“You’re going to have be a little more specific than that, Kaiba. There’s more than one he in this apartment,” Yami replied. If possible, Kaiba’s eyes seemed to burn even brighter.“I’m not going to ask again. Where is Wheeler?” Seto commanded. That question woke Yami up in an instant.“Joey? Kaiba, Joey’s not here.”END OF CHAPTER NINEWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
