Meetings: Carrot Glaze & OC Laurel Grove
Laurel hung up her phone with a sigh of disgust.
“Well, that certainly went well,” she muttered as she fell back onto the couch in her living room.
“How did you think it would go,” her roommate Natalie called from the kitchen. “I mean, you did just dump the guy.”
“The least he could do was take it like a man,” Laurel complained before reaching for the remote control resting on the arm of the couch.
“I don’t know,” Nat replied. “It’s not every day a man gets told he’s getting dumped because he’s boring. Most people I know try to be a little more discreet. Ya know the whole ‘I just don’t know what I want from life right now’ speech. You should try it some time.”
Laurel rolled her eyes as she hit the play button on the remote, and the opening of Fushigi Yuugi began to play. “That would be lying, and I try not to lie.”
“It would prevent you from having to deal with tears, threats and obscenities,” Natalie informed her before walking into the living room. “Ugh. You’re not watching this crap again, are you?”
“What does it look like,” Laurel retorted, before deliberately turning the volume on the TV up. “You know, someone like ChiChiri would never burst into tears if I dumped him. He would just shrug it off and go on with life.”
“Uh, maybe because he’s not REAL,” Natalie pointed out to her.
“I’d take him or any other anime bishie over a real man any day,” Laurel responded.
“True, fictional men are a dream compared to real ones since they seem to be without flaw. And at the rate you’re going, the fantasy boys might be all you have left to choose from,” Natalie teased. “How many guys is that this year? Fifty?”
“Don’t exaggerate, it’s annoying,” Laurel said with a scowl.
“Who said I was exaggerating?”
“I have not been out with fifty guys,” Laurel bit out. “I’d say twenty at the most.”
“You do realize it’s only February.”
“Damn, that’s right, it’s going to be Valentine’s Day next week,” Laurel shrieked. “I shouldn’t have dumped Jared. Now I don’t have anyone to take me out on the most commercialized romantic day of the year.”
“I’m sure you’ll manage to snare some poor sap before then, after all, tomorrow’s Friday,” Natalie said in a falsely sympathetic tone of voice.
Laurel just glared at her. Natalie smiled sweetly. Laurel turned her attention back to her anime, muttering to herself.
“Well, I have to get going; Mark’s going to be here any minute. I’ll be staying at his place tonight,” Natalie informed her before breezing out of the room. “Try not to have too much fun with your fantasy boys.”
Laurel stuck her tongue out at the other woman’s back.
But long after Natalie had left, Laurel found herself puzzling out the problems in her dating life. She had spent years on the dating scene, but had yet to find Mr. Right. It wasn’t for lack of trying. She went out and met people on a regular basis, had a few dates with them, and inevitably discovered she had no interest in staying with them the rest of her life. More often than not, she grew bored with them in a brief amount of time. She didn’t think she was particularly demanding. She wanted a man who was handsome, intelligent, well mannered, humorous, independent and strong willed. Was that too much to ask?
It seemed the answer was yes. Laurel did not favor certain hair, skin or eye colors. She could care less if a man was tall or short, since she was short herself. She did expect a man to be in decent shape, but he didn’t have to be a body builder. And she could care less about what type of job a man had, so long as he was motivated enough to actually work. Yet she couldn’t find the right man, and she was growing tired of looking.
With a sigh of disgust, she let her attention wander back to Fushigi Yuugi. At the moment, Hotohori was once again declaring his admiration to Miaka. Now there was a real man, Laurel thought. He was everything she wanted.
If only she could date a fantasy man, Laurel mused as she drifted off to sleep. She just knew she’d be able to find a mister right from anime men.
The moment she fell asleep, a tall shape formed over her. Had Laurel been awake, she would have believed she had at last met a dream man, for the being that loomed over her was male beauty incarnate. He was tall and lithe, well built and wearing hardly any clothing at all; garbed only in a loincloth. His visage was a work of art, though he appeared to be barely more than a teenager. His right hand clasped a great bow, and over his left shoulder rested the end of a quiver.
For all his comeliness, he was scowling down at the sleeping woman in a decidedly ugly manner. “You are going to drive me insane, aren’t you,” he growled to no one in particular.
Eros had reached his wits end with this girl. For years he had attempted to set her up with a suitable mate, yet time and again she had rejected each man he sent to her for numerous reasons. This last man, Jared Fields, had been ambitious, wealthy and attractive. He was also a surgeon. What more did this woman want?
He was at a loss as to what to do next. Laurel had become something of a personal challenge to him. He always took his duty as a matchmaker seriously, but she had become his quest for the Holy Grail. He would not give up until he had her settled down, willing or not.
Glaring around the living room, his eyes came to rest on the anime playing on her TV. A handsome, loud orange haired man was shouting and flailing around for no apparent reason, and as Eros stared at the picture, a wicked thought came to mind. So, the girl thought she wanted to date a fantasy man, hmm? Well, he’d give her one, only this would be for keeps. Once she chose her man, there would be no going back, no changing her mind, no getting bored.
With a wave of his hand, Eros transported the girl to one of his own private dimensions, a place where reality and fantasy coexisted. A place where no one would be able to find her. A place she would not be leaving until she chose her mate. He sifted through images in her mind, selecting various anime men from her memory, a diabolical grin on his face as he made his choices.
When the girl woke, she was going to be in for one hell of a surprise.
Laurel stretched and then yawned, delighting in the feel of the silken sheets beneath her. She loved lying in bed, there was something inherently relaxing and yet sensual about it that appealed to her on a basic level. She slowly opened her eyes, a sleepy smile on her face, and then abruptly sat up with a cry of alarm.
She was not in her bedroom. Instead, she was in some pink chamber that made her think of a five year old girl’s birthday cake. There were lacy frills as far as the eye could see, and all of the furniture was done in pale pink edged in gold. Laurel glanced down and grimaced when she realized even the sheets on the bed were pink with gold trim. She hated pink!
Laurel quickly leaped out of the bed and then gasped in dismay when she noticed what she was wearing: a tiny opalescent night gown that barely reached her upper thighs. Where was she, how had she gotten here, and more importantly, where were her clothes? She searched the Cake Room but found no sign of anything recognizable, not even a stitch of her own clothing. Had she been kidnapped?
She anxiously made her way to the bedroom door and swung it open, pausing to glance down in surprise as she realized it wasn’t locked. Perhaps she hadn’t been kidnapped after all. Surely no kidnapper would be stupid enough to leave her door unlocked!
“Well, hello, what do we have here,” a male voice suddenly purred, causing Laurel to shriek in spite of herself. “Tell me, did it hurt when you fell from Heaven?”
Laurel blinked in astonishment at the cheesy pick up line and looked up to glare at the speaker. Her mouth fell open when she saw who it was.
The one and only Carrot Glaze.
