I Should Have Helped…
PROLOGUE –
WHAT HAPPENED FIVE YEARS AGO
Pegasus leaned
forward and kissed his boyfriend lightly, but Gozaburo pulled him back as he
tried to pull away and kissed him more deeply. Pegasus laughed when he was
finally released and leaned against him as they entered the restaurant.
Gozaburo pulled him
to their table and deposited him in a chair, sitting across from him. “You have
to have a drink with me, Max,” he said in his robust voice as he opened the
menu. “It’s a special occasion, after all.”
He shook his
head good-humoredly, looking through his own menu. “Sorry, Gozaburo, you know I
don’t drink. History of alcoholism in my family, and all
that.”
“Real men can
hold their alcohol.”
Pegasus smirked
slightly. “Since when have you ever considered me a real man, Gozaburo?”
The older man
reached out and cupped his face briefly. “Mm, that’s true.” Then he patted him
on the cheek and pulled his hand back to continue perusing the menu. “One glass.”
“I’d rather
not.”
Gozaburo looked
up at him over the menu. “You’ll have one glass of wine with me. No harm can
come from one glass.”
Pegasus
relented, because he knew Gozaburo would win anyway. He always won. That was
how their relationship worked; Gozaburo got what he wanted, and Pegasus gave it
to him. And anyway, one glass really couldn’t hurt…
“I have a
surprise for you when we get back to my place,” Gozaburo continued.
Pegasus smiled.
“I’ll like it, I hope.”
Gozaburo graced
him with a smirk of his own. “You certainly will. You’re in for some of the
most intense pleasure you’ve ever experienced, my friend.”
Pegasus smiled
at that, half hidden behind his hair. He was a hedonist at heart, always up for
intense pleasure…
The food and
wine arrived, and Pegasus hesitantly drank when Gozaburo made his little toast
to their anniversary. To his surprise, he found that he liked it, and managed
to finish the glass fairly easily. Gozaburo refilled it before he could
protest, and he ended up drinking that one too. Then another.
He lost count eventually as his thoughts became a little hazy, and was giggling
drunkenly when they finally left. It occurred to him that Gozaburo hadn’t had
nearly as much to drink as he’d had, but the thought ceased to have any
importance as soon as he thought of it.
“Sorry, Gozie…” he giggled, leaning against him in the back of the
Kaiba limo. “Guess I’m not a real man after all…” He turned and placed a kiss
on Gozaburo’s cheek, then rested his head on his shoulder.
“That’s all
right,” Gozaburo told him, uncustomarily forgiving. “You’ll still get your
surprise.”
Pegasus smiled
up at him. “Really? You’re sweet, love…”
Gozaburo helped
him from the car, letting him lean against him as he helped him to the house.
Pegasus was noticeably unsteady, and seemed to realize this himself as he
watched his feet. It seemed to amuse him, and he laughed again, as his lover
opened his bedroom door and helped him in.
He noticed
blurrily that there was someone else there, a twelve or thirteen year old boy,
shirtless and kneeling on the floor with his head bowed slightly. It occurred
to him that Gozaburo was going to yell at him for being here, and he frowned to
himself. He tried to avoid making Gozaburo angry at all costs, because even to
him it was a rather frightening spectacle. He would think that his son would
have already learned that lesson as well…
“Is that Seto?”
he asked of Gozaburo, momentarily lucid. “I heard you talking about him…” Then
Gozaburo sat him on the bed, and he giggled to himself again, almost falling
backward but managing to stay upright.
“Yes,” Gozaburo
told him. “That’s him.”
Pegasus peered
at the boy. He was thin, but he showed signs of being quite the beauty when he
got older, with his pale skin, longish hair, blue
eyes. Those blue eyes… they were a very pretty color, but they were dead. Completely blank. He just sat there with his legs folded
under him, his hands on his knees, as though he’d been there for hours, as
though he were waiting for something. Pegasus frowned to himself again as he
realized that Gozaburo wasn’t getting mad at him.
Then he pulled
Gozaburo down beside him and leaned against him again. “When do I get my
surprise?” he asked, almost childishly. “It sounded like fun…”
Gozaburo smiled
at him. “You can have it now,” he said. Pegasus smiled brightly, and he lay
down before he fell over. He laughed and reached out for his boyfriend as he stood
up. “Come back, Gozie…” he laughed. “I’m lonely…”
“Just a moment,”
he heard, and laughed quietly to himself for no real reason, letting his head
fall to one side. “Do you want a suck or a fuck?”
He laughed out
loud. “You know the answer to that, Gozie-baby. Why
suck when you can fuck?” He found that incredibly amusing and giggled
maniacally.
“As you wish,”
Gozaburo said easily. “Though he’s very talented with that mouth of his… Here.”
He helped him sit up, though Pegasus leaned against him, still giggling
slightly. “You need to calm down a little. He’ll show you.”
“Wait.” Pegasus
stopped giggling and tried to understand what was being said. “‘He…’ Wait.” The
boy was kneeling between his feet at the end of the bed, dead eyes focused
expressionlessly in front of him as he reached toward Pegasus’s fly. All of a
sudden, he finally realized what was happening, and pushed Seto away, pushing
himself back on the bed, out of Gozaburo’s arms.
He turned to
Gozaburo and slapped him suddenly. “You sick fuck!” he yelled, disgusted even
in his drunkenness.
Gozaburo caught
his wrist as he tried to slap him again and held him tightly. “What, Max? Not
good enough for you?”
Pegasus tried to
pull his arm away, and failed. “He’s a kid, Gozaburo! What have you done to
him…?”
“I misjudged
you, Pegasus.” Gozaburo’s eyes and voice were cold. He still didn’t release his
arm. He looked dangerous, but Pegasus was too drunk to be afraid of him, when
he probably should have been.
“Of course you
have!” he yelled. “What would possibly make you think I would want to have sex
with your son?” He finally wrenched his arm away and moved backward, off of the
bed, putting a hand on the wall to steady himself. He
saw dimly that Seto was watching him, a faint expression in his eyes. Finally,
they weren’t quite as dead as before.
Gozaburo moved
toward him, and Pegasus at least had the sense to back up to stay out of arm’s reach. He looked toward Seto, saw him watching him,
and blinked for a moment to clear his mind, then held a hand toward the boy.
“Come on, Seto,”
he said. “I’m going to get you out of here…”
Seto’s eyes
widened and came alive briefly. Pegasus thought he saw hope there, until
Gozaburo hit him, knocking him into the wall.
“Seto isn’t going
anywhere,” he told him confidently. “And you aren’t going to tell anyone what
you saw here.”
Pegasus glared
defiantly at him. “The hell I’m not. You sick bastard… I can’t believe you. I
can’t believe you would do this…”
“I’ll ruin you,
Pegasus. You have to know that, and you know I can.” He stood, almost appearing
to loom over him.
“I don’t care. I
can’t let you keep doing this.” He pushed himself off the wall and stepped
uncaringly around Gozaburo, to Seto, and helped him to his feet. Seto’s blue
eyes searched his face, searching for a sign that he
really meant it… he was really going to help him…
“I’m getting you
out of here,” he said, and walked toward the door with him. He felt much more
sober than he had been when he arrived.
“Are you really
going to leave, Seto?” Gozaburo asked from behind them. There was a quality to
his voice that Pegasus didn’t like, as though he still held all the cards.
Seto froze, then pulled back slightly, barely shaking his head,
wordlessly.
Pegasus scowled
at the control Gozaburo had over him. “Come on, Seto. You can’t stay here.” He
glared back at Gozaburo. “I won’t let you keep him like this.”
Seto just shook
his head. “No… Please, Pegasus-sama, just go…”
Gozaburo smirked
cruelly at him. “You heard the boy. He won’t go.” He stepped forward and pulled
Seto back by his arm. Seto went expressionlessly back to him. “You won’t tell anyone. No one will believe you now –
you’re obviously drunk. And I’ll know if you try to tell; he’ll be dead before
anyone can help him.” Seto just stood there, not reacting to the threat on his
life, his eyes once more dead.
Pegasus narrowed
his eyes. “You wouldn’t kill a child…”
“I would.” And
Pegasus believed him, and was even more disgusted.
Gozaburo threw
Seto to the floor and grabbed Pegasus’s arm instead, pulling him from the room.
Pegasus looked back at Seto, seeing him sitting there on his knees once again,
looking down at the floor. He thought he saw a tear fall onto his hand, but
nearly fell and was forced to look forward as his now ex-boyfriend pulled him
from the house, shoving him into the waiting car and slamming the door behind
him.
“Take him home,”
he said shortly to the driver. He knocked once on the door as he walked off.
Pegasus pushed
himself up from the seat, sitting up and looking out the window as they pulled
away. He couldn’t just let Gozaburo continue abusing his son like that… He
couldn’t think properly, still fuzzy from the drink, but he was sure he would
think of something when he had slept it off…
He noticed the
driver looking at him in the rear-view mirror, just his dark eyes visible, and
tensed slightly. But nothing was said, and he relaxed a little, looking out the
window at the darkness as they passed through the forest between the Kaiba
mansion and town.
The driver
suddenly pulled over to the side of the road.
“Why have we
stopped?” Pegasus demanded.
The driver
wordlessly turned around, a gun in his hand, pointing it at him. “Get out,” he
said quietly. Pegasus paused for a brief moment, then
did as he was told. He sighed, resting his head against his arms on the top of
the car. Of course. Gozaburo wouldn’t let him escape,
after what he had seen…
The driver
pointed the gun at him, walking around the car toward him. “Move.
Away from the car.” He gestured toward the trees.
Pegasus once more did as he was told.
Then, as he
stepped into the deeper darkness under the trees, he suddenly turned and
grabbed the would-be assassin’s arm, pulling the gun from him and breaking his
arm in the process. He knocked the driver to the ground, pointed the gun at
him, and pulled the trigger within the space of a few seconds. Then he sighed
again and dropped the gun, going back to lean on the car again.
He pulled out
his cell phone and called Croquet on speed dial. “Have Jose come pick me up,”
he said. “I’m somewhere along the road to the Kaiba Mansion…
And I’ve got something for you to dispose of…”
He realized that
he would be hard-pressed to save his own life, let alone Seto’s… He rested his
head on his arms again.
