I Miss You
Bakura sat in his spirit form on Ryou’s twin sized bed, watching the ten year old sit at his desk writing a letter to his sister and mother again. He watched as Ryou wiped his teary eyes. A moment later there was a light knock on the door , the red eyes of the yami spirit narrowing and his form fading. Mr. Ryou entered the bedroom, finding his son doing his nightly ritual letter.
“Time for bed, Bakura” he gave a small smile.
Ryou folded the letter and put it in an envelope. He then stood to walk over to his bed and crawled underneath the sheets. Mr. Ryou kissed Ryou’s forehead and whispered good night, then left the room.
“Pathetic” Bakura said as he once again came into his spirit form and looked at the little boy who still cried.
“Good night, Bakura…” Ryou whispered with a sniff and hugged his pillow close, desperately trying to comfort himself, and closed his large brown eyes.
Bakura watched his host slowly fall asleep, a few tears still escaping from his eyes. Curious, Bakura stood and walked over to the desk and took the letter out of the envelope and unfolded it. He always wondered what Ryou wrote to his dead sister and mother. This particular letter seemed to be addressed to Ryou’s mother.
“Dear Mommy,
It’s been a year, mommy. I really really miss you. Daddy says you’re safe now in a beautiful place called heaven. Can you see me? From up in heaven? We had your favorite dinner tonight. I ate it all up, even though I don’t like carrots. I finally learned to swim this summer. I’m not afraid of drowning anymore. I can even open my eyes when I’m under water. I started fourth grade this year. I drew a picture of us on my Pokemon lunch box. You are the greatest mommy. I miss how you use to tickle me until my belly hurts.
I try not to cry. Daddy says it’s ok. I know you don’t like it when I cry. You never wanted me to be sad. I try, mommy, but it hurts. Are you sure you’re not coming home? Maybe some day I can visit you in heaven, ok? It’s time for me to go to bed now. I sleep with the light on just in case you come home and kiss me goon night. I love you so much. I miss you, mommy.
Love,
Bakura.”
Bakura looked over at Ryou’s bed finding that he had kept the lamp on. Bakura walked over to the bed and sat on the edge, watching the child sleep, his reincarnation. He tried to hold back his feelings of when he lost his parents. He remembered talking to them when he was alone as a child at night. He’d tell his father how he was becoming a strong man and was able to steal many beautiful things. He’d tell his mother how much he missed her hugs and cooking, even though they never had much food. He would tell himself the stories his father use to tell before they all fell asleep. Bakura sighed and used a bit more energy to create a body and laid down beside Ryou, hugging him close just this once. Ryou opened his eyes, finding his yami holding him, his eyes closed as he tried to fall asleep, a single tear falling from his left eye.
“Bakura, what’s heaven like?” Ryou asked in a whisper.
Bakura opened his eyes, “I don’t know…” he answered, hating that Ryou had woken up. Ryou looked down a bit disappointed. “I’ve heard it’s beautiful, though, like your dad said. Everyone is young and happy and no one goes hungry and everyone has a home. No one dies, no one gets sick…” Bakura wiped a tear from Ryou’s eye, “No one cries because there is no sadness.”
Ryou smiled, “I can’t wait to go. Then I can see Amane and mommy and you can see your mommy and daddy” Ryou cuddled close to Bakura. “And we can both be happy.”
Bakura kissed Ryou’s head, “Good night, Ryou.”
Bakura laid still, Ryou falling back asleep. He turned his head to look up at the ceiling. //Can you see me?// he thought, wondering if his parents were really in a heaven looking down on him, watching him. //I miss you// Bakura closed his eyes, remembering anything he could before his parents were killed, the only good memories he had.
