A.N. This was just some fic idea I
had when I was watching “The Green Mile” and when I watched the part where Tom
Hanks is watching his wife wondering what he would do if she were to die of a
tumor, and suddenly I thought, what if Yami was afraid of Yugi dying, for nor
reason what so ever, so, here it is. “Fear”
Disclaimer: If I owed Yugioh,
Yami would never have left, and Yugi and he would have been gay and happy by
the second season. So obviously, I do not own it. *Pouts*

The room was dark, painted with the
light from the stars outside of the window of the home he had lived in since returning
from the dead. The walls were as light as they had always been, though over
time the toys had been placed away and the room reorganized as the owner of the
room had out grown childhood, and entered adulthood. Even so, it still hummed
with an innocent pulse that Yami loved, and cherished above all else. At least,
it would have been had they been in the room with the sky light above the game
shop, but that room had been abandoned for the larger room of the apartment the
two now shared.
Yami had been a bit surprised when at
nineteen; Yugi had decided that they should try living on their own. Jii-chan
had agreed to the idea dropping more than one hint that the two were welcome
back at anytime should they need to, and as far as Yami knew, the old man had
changed nothing in that house even now, three years later.
Last Christmas when they had stayed
the night, the room had been the same. Untouched, unfouled,
and unchanged, a thing Yami was starting to yearn for. Sure he was grateful to
be living. To experience the change that life brought, but at the same time,
everything seemed to be spinning so quickly out of his control that he could
not handle it. Which was the cause for his and Yugi’s argument the morning before.
It had been silly really, and now, in
the darkness of the night, Yami could not recall what the argument had even
been about. All he knew was that he had yelled as his love, and his little
light had yelled back, and it ended with him slamming out of the apartment and
heading off to Kaiba Corp. even though it was his day off.
It was funny, how he had become an employee of
his arch rival. Even more so that he was Seto’s best
game tester, but at the time he’d been too angry to find much humor in the
thought. He’d been so enraged that he hadn’t really cared that Yugi was in
tears by the time he’d stormed out, and it wasn’t until he’d returned to an
empty house that night that he even thought of his consequences.
Yami sighed, looking away from the
large sliding glass doors that led to their balcony, and rolled onto his side,
crimson eyes scanning over the sleeping form of his tiny other. Soft face
relaxed in sleep, hand curled up to his mouth, Yugi looked simply beautiful.
Yami gave a sad look, reaching out and
touching that soft face, watching how Yugi moved closer to his hand as if
searching for his contact, knowing it was him. Yami swallowed back a gasp, as a
wave of fear rolled through him. He was being silly, he knew, but still, he
couldn’t help it.
When he’d found Yugi gone, it made him
worry, not finding a note or anything, and he’d gone half mad trying to find
Yugi, only to have his light return home four hours later from the game shop
and work. Yami knew he should have been understanding and even a bit bashful
for worrying and looking everywhere but at Yugi’s home and work, the game shop,
but for reason’s he didn’t understand even now, Yami had just blown up instead.
That fight had been the worse one yet.
He’d actually broken a lamp in his anger, and Yugi had turned and left out the
door.
He’d stayed with
his Grandpa that night.
The following morning, this morning,
Yami had left for work, still a bit pissed, and when he passed Yugi as his
young love was coming up, neither had said a word. Yami refused to come home
that night, and instead, followed Jonouchi and Honda out for a movie, one that
had put him where he was now.
He never thought that a fictional
story, much less some actors in a box could make him feel as unnerved as he had
been. He couldn’t remember the title of the movie, couldn’t recall the plot
line, all he could remember was the scene at the end, where the man held his
dead love in his arms, sobbing, begging, pleading with her not to leave, that
he still needed her, but it was too late. It made him think, made him wonder what
he would do had that been him and Yugi.
It had disturbed
him.
Yami returned home and found the
lights on, a gesture to him that Yugi was still worried about him, but when he
entered he found Yugi had already retired for the night, his message loud and
clear.
I love you, but I’m still pissed off
at you.
Yugi… I’m sorry… Yami thought, his hand tracing over the
features of a face he’d memories long before. I can’t explain to you why I was so angry… I don’t even know myself.
All the same, I was wrong…
Yami watched as Yugi’s face scrunched
and he rolled onto his back. His voice mumbling out Yami’s name as a small hand
rubbed at his eyes. Yami watched, his heart clenching at the scene and he moved
quickly, and with out much thought. He had pulled Yugi into his arms and was
kissing his head gently as his ands slipped around and under Yugi’s night
shirt, rubbing his back softly, reacquainting himself with the soft flesh he’d
know and felt for what felt like forever.
Dear Ra Aibou, what would I do… what would I
do, if I did not have you with me?
Unconsciously, his grip tightened, and
he felt Yugi stir in his arms, shifting against him, and Yami pulled him back
down, one hand holding his head still feeling his heated breath on his bared
chest, and simply knowing that Yugi was alive with each small exhale of air.
“Yami?” Yugi
questioned, one hand slipping up his chest to touch his face, and Yami became
aware that he was crying by the sharp intake of air, and quickly tilted his
face to nuzzle and gently kiss Yugi’s lips, forestalling his questions for the
moment.
The tender kiss was warm, and Yugi
caved to it quickly, his body relaxing in Yami’s hold like so many times
before, giving the darker spirit, now human, free reign over his small form,
and Yami shivered, breaking the kiss to roll atop of Yugi and simply hold him,
burying his face in Yugi’s shoulder.
“Yami?” Yugi
asked once more, this time his voice much softer, and more concerned than
before, his small hands running down and over Yami’s spine, in a way that
normally would have him writhing with a need to conquer and consume the body
below his own, to cause his light to scream his name, but now it only gave him
something more to fear losing.
He couldn’t explain why he was being
so weak, why that simply movie had affected him so greatly, all he knew was
that it had, and he needed to reassure himself, to know that Yugi was not going
to leave him.
Ever.
“I’m sorry, Aibou.” Yami’s voice was
just above a whisper, and he felt the shock of his words in Yugi’s body as the
boy jumped.
It was my fault as well, Yami. So I’m sorry
as well… so don’t cry… I’m sorry too.
Yugi’s soft words through their shared
mind link was enough to calm him, but the gentle brush of his light mind also left
Yami shaken, aware that they had not used it in quite a while. His hold
tightened and he felt his body quake with more tears, and Yugi abruptly
switched to vocal speech.
“Yami… I’m sorry… what’s wrong? Tell
me, ne?” Yugi was sounding panicked now, and Yami
chuckled sadly, tilting his head to press a tender kiss to Yugi’s neck.
No Aibou, I am fine… just let me hold you,
please?
Yugi seemed a bit startled by Yami’s
request, but as always he felt his light relax and smile, Yugi’s trim arms
slipping around his waist to hold him intimately close, his candy lips pressing
a tender assent to his shoulder.
Of course Yami. Whenever you want.
Yami smiled, hold Yugi close, feeling
their harts beat in sync and simply feeling Yugi live.
Thank you, Aibou… Yami paused, hearing Yugi’s soft laugh and
his response of how silly he was. Yami shifted suddenly, lifting himself up on
his arms to stare into Yugi’s eyes one hand running over Yugi’s face
desperately. Aibou… Yugi, I love you.
Amethyst eyes widened before filling
with love, a soft smile breaking over his baby face, as Yugi reached up and
pulled his dark back down atop of him, kissing his forehead reverently, and
Yami returned his arms to Yugi’s waist Holding him close, for once taking
strength from the light.
I know Yami… and I love you, so very much.
Yami smiled.
His fear really was silly, he knew.
But
still…
His fear was very
real.
And so was Yugi’s
love.
A.N. Don’t ask
