"I'm sorry Mr Wheeler, but if you cannot produce a final assessment item worthy of a high mark, I'm afraid I'm going to have to fail you for this class." Mrs Westbridge peered at the blonde boy slumped in the chair on the other side of her desk and her sharp voice softened in sympathy. "I know you're trying, however... Some people simply were not meant to have skills in these particular areas."
Joey sighed and grinned ruefully at his teacher. "In other words, I'm the worst klutz you've ever seen and there's no way I'll ever be able to avoid havin' an accident long enough to make somethin' that will earn me that pass mark."
Mrs Westbridge abandoned her stiff demeanour and chuckled softly. "I see I can spare you my attempts at tact." She shook her head. "Honestly Joey, I don't know what to do with you. I see you constantly trying your hardest and yet whenever I think you're going to succeed... something happens."
"Yeah. Although, that fire really wasn't my fault." Joey thought back to the day he'd almost blown up the classroom. "I guess I should have noticed the smell of the gas though. And all my other projects..." He hesitated and looked away, his voice lowering until it was barely audible. "They got... damaged on the trip home."
He'd never admit to the truth. It was no one's business but his that his father had caught him doing his homework and had nearly had a fit. He'd gone through Joey's room like a tornado, rage making him unusually observant until he'd managed to uncover every single one of the projects his son had worked so hard on. If he'd thrown them in the trash it might not have been so bad. A little dirt could be washed off. But he hadn't thrown them away.
He'd burned them.
He'd forced Joey to watch as he'd piled them up, lit a cigarette and set fire to everything Joey had depended on to get him the pass mark he so desperately wanted.
The memory caused a flood of rage to surge through Joey and he clenched his fists, waiting until it drained away again before he risked speaking. "Can't I have one last chance? Please!"
He raised his head, meeting the teacher's eyes with his own even though it cost him his pride to do so. He knew what she'd see there. Joey could feel the heat in his cheeks and the prickle of unshed tears in his eyes. He silently cursed himself for showing such weakness, but he couldn't help it. He wanted... no... he *needed* this passing grade.
A flicker of sympathy crossed Mrs Westbridge's face but it fled almost before he recognised it as such. Much to Joey's surprise, she regarded him with curiosity instead of the pity he'd been dreading. "You're an unusual young man, Joey Wheeler. I don't think I've ever seen anyone as determined as you are to pass my class. May I ask why you want this so badly?"
Joey hesitated, debating with himself. She was a good teacher, the best he had ever had, and she'd been nothing but patient with him through all his accidents. She'd earned the truth. Even though it would probably cost him whatever little amount of respect she might have for him. "I was dared to."
To her credit, Mrs Westbridge barely betrayed her surprise. "That is... a most unusual dare."
"Yeah, well... Ya see, it all started when... someone... insulted me by sayin' I was... a brainless mongrel. He said I couldn't pass anythin' if I was ridin' a train and it was standin' still, because the train would derail long before I got near passin'. That got me steamed. I said I could and he dared me to prove it."
Joey winced. "Problem is... I'm not passin' any of my classes at the moment."
"So when this short-term, extracurricular course opened up... Yes, I believe I understand. You thought it would be a simple course to pass." Mrs Westbridge's eyes twinkled behind her glasses as Joey hunched in his chair, his cheeks blazing with embarrassment as he nodded. "I'm sure you know better now."
"Yes, ma'am." Joey winced again. "This has been way harder than maths or science. But... it's been kinda fun too." His cheeks darkened even more as he admitted what he had barely dared to admit even to himself.
Mrs Westbridge smiled at him warmly and Joey felt a moment's hope that she might pass him after all. His hopes were dashed with her next words. "So I'm sure you can come up with something suitable for your assessment. Perhaps if you try focusing on your reason for wanting to pass, it will help you. Sometimes, a little inspiration can do wonders for a project."
Joey's mind raced through the possibilities. He didn't really see how a dare could inspire him. On the other hand though... A shiver of excitement ran through him as he remembered something. Maybe there was hope after all.
"Well there was somethin' I was working on in my free study periods. I wasn't doin' it for assessment but..." He shrugged, then frowned. "It's not finished though. They're due Friday, right?" It was already Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs Westbridge considered for a moment. "I think, Mr Wheeler, considering the circumstances and the fact that I know how hard you have been trying, I can allow you a little leeway on the due date. But it must be on my desk by five o'clock, Monday. I'll be going through them all that night."
Joey beamed at her. "Yes ma'am!"
