Twelve-year-old Ryou Bakura waited anxiously, every
muscle tensed, as his father spoke quietly into the phone. “Yes. . . .yes. . . .I understand. Thank
you.” He hung up the phone with a sigh,
the face he turned toward his only son filled with resignation. “Father?”
Asked the boy tremulously, clinging to a fatal hope the news might not
be as dire as it looked. The hands the elder male placed on the boy’s shoulders
trembled slightly, the eyes that looked into his own sorrowful “I’m sorry son,
your mother and sister are dying.
They’re in ICU right now but the doctor says nothing can be done for
them.” ~No. . . .it can’t be. . .~The
boy thought faintly. Only a hour
ago they’d received a call from the police that his mother and sister had been
in a car accident. His mother was
driving too fast in an attempt to get home before dark and lost control of the
car. They slammed right into a concrete
pylon going over 60 MPH. The police
told them it was a wonder Mother and Amane didn’t die instantly. Ryou wanted to collapse under the tremendous
guilt weighting his soul; it was all his fault, they’d gone out to pick up his
birthday cake and shop for his birthday present. No doubt they simply
lost track of time in their enthusiasm to get the perfect gift.
“Father, we
have to go to them.” Ryou stated
quietly, pleading leaking into the puppy-brown of his eyes. The hands on his shoulders became painful
clamps. “Don’t be a fool, the Gangs
would catch us before we’re halfway there.” Mr. Bakura replied tightly, looking
away from the raw entreaty in his son’s gaze.
“But we can’t let them die alone!”
Ryou cried. Surely his father
couldn’t plan to stay HERE when their loved one’s lay dying? He could, Ryou saw in the steely coldness of
his expression and the digging stiffness of his fingers. The boy tore himself away, shocked and
bewildered-- sure the demon Gangs running the streets were a danger after dark,
but this was his mother and sister they were talking about! “They won’t be alone Ryou, and we’re not
going—that’s FINAL!” Barked Mr. Bakura, more gruffly than he intended. Ryou ran away from the harsh words, pounding
up the stairs, and slamming the door of his room.
His eyes burned as he slumped against the door,
threatening tears, but he quickly swallow the thick lump in his throat. Crying wouldn’t get him what he needed, no
matter how much he wanted to do it. The
boy slid to the floor, holding his knees to his chest, grief constricting his
heart. ~The Demons. . . .~ Angry
bitterness edged that one thought. It was THEIR fault his father wouldn’t take
him to Mother and Amane. The creatures
appeared about 20 years ago, no one was quite sure how, but it had something to
do with someone mucking about with Shadow powers in Japan. The wayward Shadow magic opened a portal
into the Demons’ realm, one still open that they guarded mercilessly, and let
through hundreds of the beasts. They
made themselves at home, taking whatever and whomever they pleased, terrorizing
everyone else with their superior strength and awesome command of Shadow magic.
One might
think Earth should have been overrun and humanity enslaved, but Earth’s
environment was not completely accommodating.
The Demons quickly found they couldn’t tolerate sunlight at all, it
didn’t kill them outright, but more than a couple minutes exposure burned them
horribly. So, instead of conquering
the world, the Demon Lords made a Shadow Pact with the world’s leaders. Humans could live normally during daylight
hours, but Demons ruled the night. Any
human caught outside after dark without a Night Pass or Tag was fair game for
whatever the Demon’s pleased. Most
ended up as slaves, since the Demons inhabiting Earth were generally young and
didn’t have the taste for human flesh their elders did. Naturally, the Demon Gangs formed, each
carving out territories in various parts of the world. There weren’t any Gangs who called England
their permanent home, it was considered Neutral Territory, but plenty of Gangs had more than their
share of wanderlust. They often chose
to wander England awhile before setting off for another Neutral Territory.
His father
had a right to fear them, but none to be a coward, not now. Nor did he for that matter, Ryou focused on
the window directly across from his door.
~I. . . .I have to go to Mother and Amane. They need me. . . .~ Thought the boy, swallowing fear now
instead of tears. It didn’t occur to
him that his 12 year old self might be more hindrance than help, assuming the
hospital would let him see his mother and sister at all. Ryou’s gaze slid from the window to the
plain metal box bolted to the floor, thoughts focused on it’s contents. His
grandparents died in a house fire two years ago, prompting his father to install
a rope ladder in every 2nd floor room—including Ryou’s. ~Father never intended the ladder to be
used for THIS I’m sure.~ Ryou decided as he slowly climbed down, having
lowered the ladder with utmost care to avoid knocking against the house-siding
and possibly alerting his father several minutes before.
He reached
street level without incident, greeted by a chill fall wind edged in fog. Ryou shivered, hugging himself for warmth,
his cream-colored sweater not quite enough to keep out the cold. Empty streets draped in heavy shadows and
pale moonlight spread out before him with not even the warm glow of a
street-light to break up the cool darkness.
Why waste power when nothing human roamed after nightfall? Certainly the Demons could see perfectly well
in the dark all on their own. Another
chill gripped the boy, this one not caused by the ambient temperature—real,
spine-wrenching danger lurked out here in abundance and he’d never, ever
disobeyed his father this badly. Ryou
had always been a sweet, quiet child that did well in school and never gave his
parents cause for worry.
Shaking his head as if trying to dislodge some
courage, the boy forced himself to start running in the direction of the
hospital. Luckily they lived only a few
miles from the hospital. He’d run for
an hour, pacing himself as very few 12-year-olds would have the presence of
mind to do, when a thought occurred to him ~I have to stay away from the
parks, Teacher said Demons like to gather there~ Ryou reminded himself,
breath misting white, the cold
making his lungs sting and his throat raw.
Funny, he couldn’t remember anyone telling him much else about Demonic
habits. Shouldn’t children be taught
everything known about the creatures in case they were caught outside after
dark? Ryou’s situation aside, there had to be plenty of times children happened
to be outdoors at nightfall—either by intention or accident. Or was it no one really knew much about the
Demons, even after 20 years?
Ryou was violently jerked from his musings to the
present when his next step came down on something that rolled beneath his
Reeboks, unbalancing him and pitching him into the blacktop. Ryou swallowed a cry, pain flaring in hands
and knees as the gritty asphalt bruised and scraped them. Heart pounding even worse than during his
run the boy rose unsteadily to his feet, grimacing at bloodied, torn knees of
his jeans. ~What tripped me?~ He
wondered, eyes scanning the ground,
widening when he spotted the offending object. It still rolled, moonlight flashing over the curved surface,
winking at him mockingly. “An
acorn? Oh no. . . .that must mean I’m
near a park. . . .” Gasped Ryou in a frightened whisper. The only Oak trees in the neighborhood were
in the local park, they didn’t want to
grow anywhere else for some odd reason.
Ryou hadn’t been paying attention, when it was of utmost importance he
do so. A child’s mistake, and child he
was, but on an adult’s quest that couldn’t afford such errors.
Panic choked
his throat, he tensed to dash, when a hiss of tortured air made him look
up. A dark shape with glowing eyes
hurtled seemingly out of the depths of the full moon risen behind it, huge
bat-like wings tucked close and clawed hands extended. Ryou screamed and dove for the ground he’d
recently vacated, screamed again—in agony this time—when the Demon’s claws tore
deep furrows into his back.
Unthinkingly, instinctively, he turned his dive into a roll, grinding
dirt into his wounds. The boy ended up
in a dazed sprawl on soft grass, staring at a huge Oak tree only a couple yards
away. In the convoluted tangle of
moonlight and shadows thrown by nearby skyscrapers, he hadn’t realized just how
close to the park he actually was.
“Damnit boy,
you weren’t supposed to move. I WAS
gonna be nice to you but NOW you’re gonna get it!” The Demon snarled, hovering
above the human after just barely pulling out of his dive in time. The human boy couldn’t see anything but a
lanky winged form silhouetted by silvery moonlight; if he had better light he
would’ve seen an ebony-haired youth with emerald eyes, his signature dice
earring dangling from one ear. Stunned
by pain and terror, Ryou could only weakly flail his limbs as the Demon dove
again. Time slowed, as if everything
moved through chilled honey, the 2 second dive seeming to take 2 hours as Ryou
watched the Demon come ever closer.
Shaking fingers groped desperately along the hard ground for something,
anything that could help him. They
closed over a rough-surfaced, vaguely cylindrical object as long as his
arm. Ryou threw it, adrenaline adding
strength and sharpening his aim enough that the tree branch hit the Demon
square on the temple. The creature
dropped without a sound, falling like a wayward meteor, crashing an unmoving
pile of haphazard limbs when he ‘landed’.
Ryou
flinched at the heavy ‘thunk’ and wet crack of several bones snapping. ~There’s bound to be more, I have to get
out of here!~ Ryou stood up,
hissing as raw fire streaked his wounded back, slightly cooled by the icy air.
The back of his sweater hung in tattered strips edged in blood and grime. ~I wonder how bad off I am? It doesn’t
matter, I’m going to a hospital after all.~ Thought Ryou, stumbling into a
jog, stride unsteady from a mixture of shock and pure nerves. He desperately wanted to run home, to safety
and a warm bed, where Demons never tread,
the desire a palpable ache within him; unfortunately, he’d passed the
halfway point, common sense unusual for someone his age left him only one
choice. The scared boy once again aimed
himself towards the hospital.
Dizziness
made Ryou slow down into a walk 2 blocks later, and pain stopped him completely
after another three. He half-collapsed
against the corner of a bank, the rough
bricks harsh on his soft cheek. ~Ohhh,
it hurts so much! I just want it to stop! Why am I so dizzy? I can’t have lost
that much blood, could I?~ Ryou moaned to himself, silently wishing an
adult would show up to take care of him.
Of course he didn’t notice the dark stain ringing the waist of his
jeans, not horribly large at the moment but slowly growing. The claw-marks were somewhat deep, not life
threatening, not yet, but might become so without treatment. It didn’t help
Ryou was sliding further into shock with every passing moment either.
~At least I’m within sight of the hospital, it’s
only a block or so away, surely I can
make it there. I’ll just rest here a moment.~ Reasoned the boy, cocoa eyes drifted to the
glowing red-cross symbol marking the front of the towering hospital
complex. There were other hospitals in
the city of course, but Saint Joseph’s was the largest and best at treating
severe trauma victims. Ryou didn’t know
that, because of youthful inexperience it hadn’t occurred to him that his mother
and sister might be at another hospital.
~Has anyone has seen me tonight? Has Father even noticed I’m gone
yet?~ Ryou wondered. It was doubtful anyone spotted him, unlikely to see
him through the heavy blinds they closed after dark. No one wanted Demons playing peeping-tom--they could go outside
to chase them off after all. Besides,
nobody wanted a demon to take a fancy to themselves or a family member. The Shadow Pact allowed each Demon to take a
human slave of their choosing, people didn’t want their homes used for demonic
window shopping. As for his father, Mr.
Bakura rarely noticed anything about his son at all, preferring to spend time
that wasn’t buried in work with the females of the household.
~I better go,~ the boy forced himself to start walking,
more slowly and unsteadily than previously. ~I was lucky before. If I stay
here much longer other Demons might--~ The thought shattered into panicked
confusion as a strong force wrenched him off his feet and into the air. Ryou cried out, cold wind and colder
laughter swirling around him, the ground under his sneakers falling away at
horrifying speed. The white-haired boy
thrashed, nearly strangled by the pale arms crushing him to a leanly muscled
chest. “Don’t struggle tenshi, I
wouldn’t want you to fall.” A low husky voice purred in his ear, a light nip on
the lobe punctuating the amused words.
Ryou stilled instantly, trembling, breath coming in labored gasps. Oh
Gods, his worst nightmare turned reality, a Demon had him. “Good boy.” The
Demon praised, nuzzling the sensitive skin behind the human’s ear, his giant
pewter-colored wings pumping them steadily higher. Upon reaching the desired height, several hundred feet above the
hospital’s roof, the tallest building in the city, the Demon ceased climbing. The boy and Demon hovered for a moment of
quivering silence, tension thick enough to swim through, before the Demon
moved. He flung his burden into open
air, sadistic laughter pursued Ryou into freefall. “At least I wouldn’t want you to fall until I got high enough!”
A/N: This isn’t a one-shot! There’s lots more to
this story, honest. I’ll be putting up the next chapter soon—I don’t want to
leave everyone hanging TOO long. In the
interim. . . . REVIEW! J Also, I’ll be updating ‘Shadowed Violet’ quite
soon as well.
HELP! I’m looking for a
Yu-Gi-Oh! fanfic I read about a year ago and can’t remember it’s name or
author! I can’t recall the summary, but the story had Ryou, Bakura, Malik, and
Marik. Basically the yamis abused their
hikari’s so much they went crazy and somehow ended up on the street (I don’t
remember how exactly and it may just have been Ryou that ended up on the
street). Bakura and Marik start needing
their lights to balance their darkness and ended up taking in the other yami’s
hikari. In other words Bakura and Malik
end up together, as do Ryou and Marik. Eventually, the hikari’s regain their
sanity and come to love their yami caretakers.
In particular I remember at the end of the story Ryou and Malik talking
together, and one asks the other if they should switch back (I don’t remember
who asks what). The other replies that
it wouldn’t be a good idea. This fic
may actually be on fanfiction.net (it probably is) but I know a lot of people
who read fics here also go there. Any
help at all would be much appreciated, I’ve tried searching for it and am
unable to find it. If this description
even vaguely matches a fic you’re familiar with please give me it’s title. My e-mail address is: spirit_dancer_1@hotmail.com or
you can just leave it in a review if you prefer. Thanks!
