Duke Devlin definitely knew how to throw a good party.
It was New Year's Eve and he'd hired out a whole nightclub so his friends and business associates could celebrate and ring in the New Year in the style he was accustomed to. The music was loud, the dancers were gyrating, the drinks were flowing and there were examples of his company's merchandise spread around the club so his logo was everywhere.
No one could ever accuse Duke of wasting an advertising opportunity.
By half-past eleven, the party was in full swing and everyone was having a wonderful time. Everyone except a certain dark-haired CEO who was standing off to one side of the stairs leading to the club's upper level and scowling at the dance floor.
To be exact - he was scowling at a certain slender blonde teenager on the dance floor.
Joey was having the time of his life. He moved sensually to the beat of the music - the pleasure on his face so obvious that he was drawing quite a few stares. Not that he noticed. He was so caught up in the music that it would have taken a Red Eyes Black Dragon flying into the room to distract him.
He didn't even notice the way Kaiba was glaring at him as if he wanted to pull him off the dance floor.
His dance partner noticed, though.
Bakura was smiling very smugly as he made sure to dance as close to Joey as he could, without actually touching him. One touch and the blonde boy would realise how close he was and Bakura knew he'd immediately tell him to back off.
He was having too much fun annoying Kaiba to want to do that just yet.
From the way his beloved Ryou was pouting at him though - he knew he'd have to stop soon. His little lovely wanted to dance with him and that was higher on his list of things to do that night than annoying Kaiba. In fact - the only thing higher on his list was something that he hoped dancing would lead to... if they could find somewhere private in this club.
Hopefully the sound of the music would be enough to cover Ryou's screams of pleasure. Maybe.
Bakura reluctantly focused on what he was doing - rather than enticing thoughts of Ryou screaming - and glanced over at Kaiba for one last look at his furious face before leaning in and whispering to Joey. "Don't look now, but Kaiba's here."
Joey's eyes snapped open and he frowned as he realised how close Bakura was. His comment was his main focus though. "Kaiba? Where?" He too spoke very close to Bakura's ear - out of necessity since the music was loud enough to drown out their voices otherwise.
"Over by the stairs. Ryou wants to dance so if you want to go pounce him..." Bakura smirked as Joey jerked back and stared at him in shock and horror.
"Wha... I don't know what you're talkin' about!" The blonde boy looked very uneasy.
Bakura would have enjoyed tormenting him more, but Ryou was smiling shyly at someone who had just approached him and he needed to go stake his claim before it was jumped. "Relax. We all know you have a thing for him. We're all fine with it. So go already." Bakura barely finished speaking before he hurried off to rescue his Ryou from the idiot who was trying to pick him up.
Joey arched an eyebrow and shook his head - grinning. Bakura was so easy to read. He'd practically told him that the gang had a bet going on when he and Kaiba would hook up and Bakura probably had money on it being that night. His smile faded as he glanced over at Kaiba and saw him stalking towards him. "I hope he's right," he muttered before going to meet the brunette.
"Wanna dance with me?" Joey leaned in close so Kaiba could hear him and tried not to moan as he caught a whiff of the brunette's cologne. Apparently someone had found a way to bottle sex. Trust Kaiba to know where to buy it.
"Are you sure your... partner... will not object?" Seto sounded as unhappy as he looked.
"Who? Oh! Bakura? Nah. He's pouncin' his lover." Joey gestured to the two white-haired teens and then had a second look. "Uh... Change that. Ryou's pouncin' him."
Seto took a second to confirm that before returning his attention to Wheeler. "We need to talk."
Joey stared at him. "What?"
An unhappy frown settled on Seto's face. "I said, we need to talk."
"That's what I thought ya said." Joey stared at the brunette some more. "Why?"
"Chocolate flavoured body paint." Sapphire orbs locked with golden brown and issued their challenge.
A golden head nodded in silent acceptance.
Joey tried not to look as nervous as he felt as he followed Kaiba upstairs and into a small enclosed bar area that had small tables and chairs set up for its patrons. There were only a few others there and they were on their way out to join the festivities as the two teenagers arrived. As soon as Kaiba closed the door, they were alone.
They could also hear again - thanks to the glass that enclosed the room and cut off most of the sound from outside.
Seto gestured for the other boy to take a seat and then slipped into the one opposite him. He looked at Wheeler seriously and opened his mouth.
"So how long have ya known it was me?" Joey figured it was better to make the first move and try to catch Kaiba off-guard. He had a feeling it would be the only chance he had to defend himself against whatever the brunette had in mind.
"Since that day." Seto smiled a little - seeing through Wheeler's tactic. "I saw you leaving from my bedroom window."
Joey winced. "So why didn't ya say anythin'?" He tried to relax but his body was just too tense.
"Because you were unaware that I knew." Seto shrugged. "I thought perhaps you might have wanted to tell me yourself. I gave you a month, then I took matters into my own hands. Literally." He kept his gaze steady on the blonde's face as he tried to gauge his mood.
"Ya mean..." Despite his shock, Joey's mind was racing. "The whole window deal... that was a set-up? But... Why?" He frowned. "Ya like bein' watched or somethin'?"
Seto arched an eyebrow. "I did not mind it that time. But no. Think about the date, Wheeler."
"What does..." Joey didn't need to finish his sentence as the answer dawned on him. "White Day? That... was...?"
The brunette nodded. "That was your White Day present. I know the tradition is to give something white, so I thought the white sheets on the bed were quite a good touch." His lips curved in a small smile as he studied the obviously shocked blonde teen opposite him.
"But... why go to all that trouble? I mean... why not just tell me ya knew?" Joey frowned. "Ya played me for a fool."
Seto was quick to shake his head. "Not at all. I was just... hedging my bets."
Joey's frown deepened. "I don't get it."
"You had given me a Valentines Day gift, but the way it was given... I was unsure if you intended it as a joke or were serious. Your White Day gift could have been taken as either an indication that I was willing to be approached by you or merely my way of saying that I knew you had given me the body paint. It was sitting on the bedside table in plain sight," he explained at Wheeler's confused look. "When you asked to meet with me the next day, I thought you were going to say something about it. You surprised me. I realised that the meaning of my gift might not have been as obvious as I thought."
"Ya got that right! I had no idea! I thought it was just an accident! Even if I'd worked it out, I wouldn't have thought you'd really be considerin'..." Joey stopped and thought over what Kaiba had said. "You were willin' to be approached by me? That's what ya said." He bit his lip. "Is that... still true?"
Seto arched an eyebrow. "You can ask that after the gifts we exchanged for Christmas?" A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth but vanished before it finished forming. "Or was your gift merely a joke? If so..." He started to stand - the hollow feeling in the pit of his stomach at the blonde's stare almost unbearable. A hand caught his wrist.
"Stay. Just... I just need a minute to get my head around this." Joey closed his eyes for a few seconds then opened them again as he pointed to Seto. "What do you think of me?"
It was the last question he was prepared to answer - and the first one he should have guessed Wheeler would have asked. Inwardly cringing at his lack of preparation, Seto did the only thing he could do.
He answered honestly.
"I think you are loud, brash, overconfident, loyal to your friends, a... passable... duellist, someone I would rather have as a friend than as an enemy, highly attractive and someone who I believe would turn my life upside down if allowed too near... But I believe the benefits of that would far outweigh the disadvantages." Seto forced himself not to look away, although the expression in Wheeler's eyes was not encouraging.
Although he had little experience in such matters - Seto had a feeling that it was not good if a potential lover was amused at hearing something like that.
"What do you think of me?" He wasn't sure he really wanted to know - but he felt he should ask.
Joey grinned. "That you're rude, arrogant, cold, unfriendly, too proud for your own good and stuck up. But... you're also gorgeous and from what I saw back in March, you're probably good in bed, too." He leaned forward. "Then there's your honesty and the fact ya love your little brother and would do anythin' for him. I really like that. I also love your taste in Christmas presents." He sat back again and smiled. "So what do ya think we should do?"
Although Seto wasn't entirely happy about the list - he had to admit that Wheeler had been truthful and even generous in a couple of areas. The blonde's question was the same one he'd been trying to answer for the past week without success - but suddenly the answer was clear.
"I think we should start seeing each other and find out where that leads us." He smiled a little.
Joey grinned and nodded. "I think that sounds pretty good."
Outside, the noise level suddenly dropped. The two boys both looked over at the door curious about what was happening.
"Oh!" Joey looked at his watch. "It's the countdown! They're doin' the countdown." He jumped up and started for the door, but stopped when Seto caught hold of his arm. He frowned at the brunette. "We're gonna miss it!"
Seto smirked. "We can hear it from here. I wanted to get this sorted out tonight for a reason." He leaned in closer to the confused blonde boy and smirked a little more. "There is a New Year's tradition that I normally find quite tiresome, but this year I am looking forward to it. If we go out there... then you are sure to be swept away by your friends and I will miss out."
Understanding lit up Joey's eyes and he grinned as he moved - snuggling into Kaiba's embrace and slipping his arms around the brunette's back so they were well entwined. "Oh yeah. Good point."
Outside the countdown was nearing completion - the crowd cheering out the last numbers. "Three! Two! One! Happy New Year!"
Seto smiled at the blonde he had secretly been longing to be closer to since long before the chocolate flavoured body paint gift. "Happy New Year... Joey." The name felt unfamiliar on his tongue - but right. So very right.
Joey smiled back at the brunette he had been dreaming about for so long. "Happy New Year... Seto."
They held each other close as their lips touched and then moved against each other's in their first kiss.
It was their first kiss of many that night and for years to come - and more than a few of them were chocolate flavoured.
