Every
day, the sun rises over the Nile, and covers the land of Egypt in a baking,
unforgiving heat. The city of Cairo, for all its splendour, and the presence of
the Palace, is no different. The people of Egypt have learned to live with this
curse, and tolerate it. It’s just part of their land. Everyone gets on with
their work; labourers, scholars, merchants, noblemen, even up to the residents
of Cairo’s great Palace. Home of the Pharaoh; a god made man, to rule over the
Egyptian people.
Yuugi
Motou, 16 years old, was caught up in his duties, along with everyone else. At
this moment, he was washing the floor, outside the Pharaoh’s council chambers.
There was a meeting in session, and usually, slaves would be banished from the
area for that duration. But, the meeting was unplanned, and unexpected. No-one
had had time to inform Yuugi, so he was attending to his duties as normal.
Bending over
the rough floor, Yuugi could feel his back running with sweat. All he wore was
a small linen waistcloth. Usually, it wouldn’t even be pure linen, but Yuugi
was a special slave. He was in the service of the god-king; Pharaoh Atemu. He
had to look the part.
He’d won
this position out of almost pure luck. Even as a boy, his expressive, amethyst
eyes, and unusual hair had won the interest of many higher members of the
council. The Pharaoh himself had handpicked him from a group of other boys,
even.
Yuugi moved
back onto his knees, wiping sweat off his face. His arms and back were aching,
and he could feel the unpleasant sting of the first warning of sunburn. You’d
think, living in Egypt, Yuugi’s skin would’ve adapted to the climate, but no.
His skin remained, stubbornly, too pale to resist the harsh Egyptian sun. The
boy’s chest and back were glistening with sweat, and he fought the urge to
empty the bucket of water he was using, over himself. But doing so would mean
he’d have to cross back to the Palace garden, and refill the bucket from the
fountain. To hell with that.
So, he
carried on his work; bent forward on his hands and knees, scrubbing at the hewn
floor. As he moved up the corridor, the large, double doors that lead to the
council room came into view. As he drew closer and closer, Yuugi started having
longer and longer stares at it. Finally, the little slave boy drew abreast of
the doors, and paused.
There was
only one guard on the door. Usually, there would’ve been more, but the
emergency meeting made it hard to find them. No-one knew what had caused the
Pharaoh and his High Priest to go into such an angry panic, only that they’d
summoned all the Pharaoh’s advisors, and holed themselves up in the room.
Yuugi
looked up at the guard, nervously, then his face split into a smile. The guard
in question, gave him a brief wink and a nod.
Jounouchi
Katsuya. He and Yuugi had been friends since birth, almost, and it was thanks
to Yuugi he even had the job. Indeed, Jounou was many people’s bet to become
the next Captain of the Pharaoh’s guard. He was unexpectedly loyal to the
Pharaoh, in almost every way. There were some exceptions, however...
“Hey,
Jou.”
“Yuugi,
what’re you doing? You aren’t meant to clean here when there’s a meeting on.”
“By the
time I found out, it was too late, so Anzu said to go ahead, but be quiet.
They’ll be in there for hours, anyway.” Yuugi gathered his knees under him,
temporarily forgetting about the floor, and giving Jou a sly look, “... Is the
Pharaoh in there?”
Jou
smirked at his friend, but didn’t comment. Instead, he jerked his head towards
the door. It was slightly ajar; almost unnoticeably. “See for yourself.”
For a
moment, as always, he considered not doing it. Yuugi and Jou knew more about
what went on behind closed doors in the Palace than almost anyone. They’d been
sneaking peeks, and listening behind hedges, for almost a year now. And they
never got caught. Well, almost never. There was the one time they’d tried to
look in on the High Priest, Seto, but that hadn’t ended well. They didn’t spy
on the High Priest since then. Yuugi shoved the memory away, and crawled
towards the gap between the doors.
At first,
he couldn’t see anything. The door was at a horrible angle, in relevance to the
table in the middle of the room. But, after a bit of fidgeting and moving,
including a moment where he made the door move, and almost died from anxiety
that it would be seen, he finally got a good view. Of the Pharaoh Atemu, that
is.
The
Pharaoh was seated, as always, at the head of the table. He was dressed in a
wrap, like everyone else, but his body was adorned with jewels and gold. A
solid gold chest piece covered the top part of his torso. His arms and wrists
were wrapped with bracelets and armlets and Yuugi could even see gold detail on
his sandals. The Pharaoh looked like the god that everyone believed him to be.
At his
feet, Jou heard his friend sigh, almost silently. It was a dreamy, breathless
sigh, and Jou rolled his eyes. “Oi.” His foot came up, nudging Yuugi’s
backside, “Stop ogling the Pharaoh and tell me what they’re so worried about.”
Because,
you see, that was the reason they watched, and listened, and spied. It was
also, although he’d never admit it, the reason Yuugi worked so hard. Ever since
he turned 14 or so, and became one of Atemu’s numerous attendants, Yuugi had
been heavily in love. He’d never exchanged words with the Pharaoh, or even been
in the same room as him for more than a few moments, but every time he was, the
reaction was extreme. Yuugi’s heart would start hammering in his chest, so loud
he would’ve sworn everyone could hear it. His skin tingled, and his mind raced,
and he had trouble not breaking, or dropping things. It was a childish crush,
and a heavy one. Pharaoh Atemu was Yuugi’s birth, life, death, and reason for all
of them. Or, so he told himself.
For a
moment, Yuugi didn’t respond. Ignoring Jou’s insistent kicks, he concentrated
on listening, hard, to what the counsellors were talking about.
“... no
way of knowing what’s happened to it, or even why it’s been taken...”
“... like
the work of that bastard Thief King...”
“...interest would someone have in
the Millennium Puzzle? It’s power only works for the
Lord Pharaoh...”
“Silence.”
Atemu’s
voice rose above the confused discussion, and Yuugi felt a shiver run down his
spine. Atemu’s voice was firm, not too deep, and, to Yuugi, incredibly sexy.
The Pharaoh had stood up, and was addressing the entire room.
“We do not know why my Millennium
Puzzle has been stolen. It is well-known that it’s powers can only be fully utilized
by someone of Royal heritage. It is entirely harmless in the hands of anyone
else. Nonetheless, it must be found! I can’t stress this enough!” Atemu’s
eyes narrowed, and Yuugi found himself admiring the colour. Rich, slightly
pinkish ruby, and they burned with a quiet passion. When he looked at you –
Yuugi could count on one hand, and remember vividly, the times the Pharaoh had
looked at him – it felt like he could see right into your soul.
“The Puzzle was taken from my
personal chambers, while I slept. I keep guards outside my room all night,
which means the person must have been a very accomplished thief. As well as locating the Puzzle, the thief
that stole it must also be apprehended, in case he takes something
of more value next time.”
Yuugi’s
heart was beating in his throat, and it wasn’t just the sight of his beloved
Pharaoh that’d done it. He could feel Jou’s foot, nudging into his ribs, and he
turned to his friend.
“Someone’s
taken the Pharaoh’s Millennium Puzzle, stolen it.” As he said it out loud, he
wondered why he hadn’t noticed that the Pharaoh wasn’t wearing that particular
necklace. It was huge, and ridiculously noticeable. Yuugi watched his friend’s
face turn to horror, then thoughtfulness.
“Stolen
it? But uh... his Majesty only takes that thing off to sleep and bathe, right?”
Yuugi
shuffled back from the door, returning to the forgotten bucket of water. He was
nodding as he spoke “Mmhm, and they say it was stolen
while he slept last night.” Raising his hands, he dunked them back in the
water; fumbling for his cloth and half-heartedly starting to scrub the floor
again. “Everyone’s panicking about it. They’re talking about Thief King
Bakura.”
The
colour drained from Jou’s face, and he swallowed. Almost silently, his mouth
formed the words ‘Thief King Bakura...!’ with mild horror.
Yuugi
understood his friend’s horror. Bakura held the reputation for being the most
successful – but most bloodthirsty – Thief in the whole of Egypt. People
whispered stories about him slaughtering whole families, and it didn’t matter
if the stories were true or not, because there was no way to exaggerate what
Bakura would do.
Yuugi
felt a soft, unpleasant shiver. The idea of Thief King Bakura entering the
Palace while everyone slept, made his blood run cold. Trying to push away the
thought, Yuugi filled his mind, instead, with images of his beloved Pharaoh,
and returned to his scrubbing.
---That Night--
Yuugi’s
body felt like an aching, horrible, riot of pain. His back was burning from sun
exposure, and he knew it would only halfway heal overnight. After the long,
wide council hall, he’d cleaned floors across what felt like every part of the
Palace. Yuugi hated cleaning floors,
but he was really the best choice.
Hate being short. Hate being
small. I’m smaller than most of the girls, so they make me clean the stupid floors!
Entering
his own – admittedly small – room, Yuugi kicked off his sandals. Most of the
slaves slept in communal bedrooms, but a small amount had their own rooms.
Mainly because the communal rooms were full. The bedrooms were abysmally small,
about the size of a large closet, but Yuugi was ridiculously pleased with the
fact that he had one. Usually, anyway. Right now, he wasn’t too pleased with
anything.
That was
when he saw it.
Lying on
his bed, glinting in the moonlight, was a small, golden pyramid. The usual
covers on his bed were bunched to one side, and the little golden thing was sat
on the naked padding that comprised the bottom of the bed. For a moment, Yuugi
just froze. Then, slowly, he inched across the room. The closer he got, the
more obvious it was. It was only when he was right in front of it, did he admit
it to himself.
The
Millennium Puzzle was in Yuugi’s bedroom.
“H-how-...
?!” Looking around, Yuugi was immediately suspicious. Panic ran through him,
and he darted back to the door, slamming it shut. His breath came in rapid
gasps, and his mind was racing.
How did it get in here!? How? Who
put it there?!
Crossing
back to his bed, he snatched up the Puzzle; lifting it right in front of his
face. The Eye of Horus, set into the front of it, glinted innocently in the
light. There was no mistaking it. Yuugi gave a low moan of despair, and started
to speak out loud.
“Oh
gods... if anyone sees me with this... oh gods.” He’d be executed for stealing.
The truth lay like a cold weight in his stomach, and the boy flopped onto the
bed, helplessly. “How... what am I gonna do... how am I... I’ve gotta put it back,
somehow. I’ve got to put it back before anyone finds it here. But, how? How am I gonna...”
Yuugi
squeezed his eyes shut tight. Still gripping the Puzzle, in both hands, he
lurched to the side. Laying out on the bed, he opened
his eyes to stare at the ceiling. Then, slowly, he raised his hands, until the
Puzzle came into view.
“... Why
is it in my room, anyway?”
No-one
answered him. Well, there wasn’t anyone that could answer. Yuugi’s brows
creased into a frown, and he rubbed one finger down the side of the Puzzle.
Dimly, he noticed it wasn’t as heavy as it looked. It was actually surprisingly
light, for something made of solid gold. The metal was pleasantly cool to the
touch, and totally smooth. The joins where the Puzzle pieces connected could be
seen, but not felt. And, as he held it, Yuugi slowly noticed something.
It was as
if the Puzzle was charged. The metal was shaking under his fingers, so very,
very slightly, that he hardly noticed it. But, the second he noticed it, it
seemed to get stronger. Frowning, his panic slowly returning, he stared at the
thing.
“... What
if the Pharaoh can feel when someone else is holding it? What if...” Yuugi
gulped, “What if... what if the High Priest finds out... I can’t... I have to
put it back, somehow. Some... how...” Shutting his eyes, trying to ignore the
gentle shaking coming from the Puzzle, the little slave fought to figure out
some way he could return it. Secretly, so he didn’t get caught.
Tomorrow,
he was scheduled to clean the council room. It was always a mess after
meetings; especially emergency ones. The room was huge, so he would probably be
assigned with one other person, to get the job done quicker. So, there was no
way he could leave it in the council room. The only place he could leave it...
only place...
Yuugi’s
eyes flickered open.
The Pharaoh’s chambers.
That’s the only place. No-one’s there during the day, when Atemu’s in the
throne room. I’m gonna have to sneak there, and...
Yuugi
felt a throb of apprehension. There was always a guard on the door, to prevent
thieves from entering. The only way he could get in, would be if the guard was...
Jounouchi.
Jounou won’t suspect me. Oh god, I hope he won’t...
Even as
he formulated his plan, Yuugi could feel his eyes drifting shut. The day’s work
caught up with him, cutting through his panic with insistent sleepiness. If he was to carry things out as he thought,
he would have to be awake early, which meant sleeping now.
For a
moment, the boy deliberated over what to do with the Puzzle while he slept. He
only had one shelf in his room, and that would put it in plain view. Finally –
feeling horribly guilty and self-conscious – the little slave boy looped the
Puzzle’s strap around his neck.
The metal
sat innocently against his chest, hanging around his neck. But, slowly, as
Yuugi concentrated, he could feel something. It was like the Puzzle was giving
off a faint warmth, or energy, but the metal was still cool to the touch. Frowning his confusion, the slave eventually slid down in
his bed. The room was almost pitch black, and he was
fairly confident you couldn’t tell he had anything in bed with him, other than
himself.
As he lay
in the dark, one of Yuugi’s hands rose; cupping the Puzzle in his fingers and
stroking the surface. Talking to himself, his voice stayed at a low murmur.
“...Atemu
always has you around his neck, except when he sleeps.” The boy’s eyes slid
shut, and he sighed, “... You’re always close to him, aren’t you? Every day of his life.” As if answering him, the Puzzle gave
a soft thrum of energy, “I wish I could be with him. But... what interest would
the great Pharaoh take in a boy like me?” Sadness, like a weight in his
stomach, made Yuugi open his eyes again, “I’m nothing to him. I wish...” He
paused, staring at the wall, “... I wish I could have a chance, one chance, to
be close to Atemu. Because, I bet, that would be wonderful...”
Yuugi’s
voice lowered even more, letting out a small, choked sound. Not exactly a sob,
so much as an outlet for his loneliness. “To have him talk to me... or... or
hold me...” His voice was starting to stutter, just a little, “... Or kiss
me...” Clasped against his chest, Yuugi didn’t notice the Puzzle beginning to
glow and shimmer. “... Or... or anything like that.”
As if
responding to his words, the Puzzle’s glow got brighter, and thick, dark light
began to pour from the Eye of Horus. Like some kind of thick mist, the power
spread down Yuugi’s body; coating his skin, under the covers.
“... But,
that’s just a dream. It’d never really happen.” Yuugi’s voice faded out,
punctuated by a soft yawn, as sleep finally claimed him. The Puzzle was bright
enough to light the whole room, for just a few moments, before the light was
suddenly cut off. The dark shadows that had been coating Yuugi’s body, seemed
to be absorbed inwards, and disappeared. Only when he woke up, would Yuugi know
the changes his wishes had made.
