Summary: Why…why did He have to be the one to find it? Why…why would He risk his life for it? Questions without answers. That was what he had. And Seto Kaiba hated it.
CHAPTER ONETears streamed down his face as he reached out a shaky hand to grasp his best friend’s hand. He and Yami had been walking back from Joey’s apartment when Yugi had recalled forgetting something at the apartment. Since it wasn’t all that late, they had turned around and gone back. When they had reached the third floor, they had heard a bone-chilling scream. It had turned their blood cold as they ran to the source of the scream. Joey’s apartment. The door had already been cracked open when they made it there. They threw the door open and ran inside. The sight they came across was one Yugi doubted he would ever be able to erase from his mind. His strong-willed and tough friend had been cowering in a small ball on the floor; Joey bleeding everywhere and clutching his head screaming. His father towering over him, yelling and cursing.Yugi had reacted without thinking. Snatching up the object he had forgotten on the coffee table – a large history textbook – Yugi bolted at the man. He slammed the book hard into base of his spine, causing the man to come down to his knees. One well-aimed shot to the back of his head and Joey’s father fell sideways to the floor unconscious.Yami had quickly called an ambulance while Yugi tried to calm Joey down, who had been reduced to whimpers. Now his friend lay here in a hospital bed, bandaged up and in pain. Yugi turned his teary gaze to his lover who stood beside him.“I don’t understand, Yami. Why would his father do this to him?” Yugi asked.Yami shook his head.“I don’t know, Yugi. I spoke with the doctor. He said Joey has frequently visited the hospital with injuries.” Pause. “I don’t think this was the first time his father has hit him.”Yugi’s eyes grew wide before his head snapped back to Joey. He couldn’t believe his best friend could have been suffering all this time and he hadn’t known.“Yugi, I also spoke to the officers outside.”Yugi slowly turned his head back around to him.“They say it’s likely his father will get out on bond and it’s not safe for Joey to go home,” Yami told him.Neither of them had to say it. As much as it hurt to admit it, Joey wouldn’t be able to stay with them. They were limited on space and the only available sleeping space was on the couch. They knew Joey would need a bed and a place to rest.No one else knew about the abuse. Ryou and Malik had Marik and Bakura to deal with. Tea’s parents…well; they hated the former gang member. Tristan’s parents tolerated Joey’s presence but for the amount of time he would need to recover, they would be pushing things.A gentle knock stirred Yami from his thoughts while Yugi laid his head down on his best friend’s uninjured arm. Yami went to the door where an officer was standing. He had Joey’s backpack in hand.“We found this in Mr. Wheeler’s apartment. We put a few clothes in it for him and the pictures you mentioned,” the officer said, handing it to him.Yami thanked as he carefully swung it over his shoulder. The officer looked over his shoulder at the young blonde and shook his head. Yami raised an eyebrow.“I know Wheeler. I arrested him a few times when he was in the gang. A year ago, he came into the station a few times injured and claimed it was his father.” Pause. “None of us believed him. He stopped coming after the fourth or fifth time. A lot of us thought he had returned to the gang.”Yami couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Joey had done a lot to atone for his past behavior. And was still doing a lot to make up for his past. Didn’t the officers know that? Yami stepped closer and lowered his voice, not wanting to upset his lover more.“Officer McCallahan, would it surprise you to know that Joey volunteers every other week at an animal shelter? He volunteers from sun up to sun down. He helps clean kennels, feeds the animals, and takes the dogs for walks. He helps match families with new pets. The shelter is planning to award him the Volunteer of the Year award this Christmas,” Yami told him.The forty-something old officer looked downright ashamed. He hadn’t been aware of that. In fact, he doubted anyone in the squad knew of the new leave Joey Wheeler had turned over. Yami surprised him when he continued.“And those other weeks? Joey helps out at the library. He reads to children during story time and helps shelve books. Once in a while, Joey even helps show some of the elderly how to work on the computers.”Office McCallahan had never felt so guilty in his life. He remembered the last time had seen the blonde. It had been near last Christmas. He had been pulled off to the side of the road while his partner was inside. He had cut the engine to save on gas.Wheeler had come walking past the car with his hands shoved in his pockets and his head down. He had walked to the entrance of the station, but paused with his hand on the door. From his car, McCallahan could see the blonde’s hand tighten on the doorknob. Joey then released the door and turned away to face his direction. The young man had a bleeding bottom lip and a black eye.He had walked away by a few steps before glancing up over his shoulder at the police station. McCallahan realized now what the look in his eyes had been. Longing. Longing for someone to understand. To believe him. To help. How long had this young man been hurting and with no one believing him?“When he wakes up, can you please tell him I came by? And when he’s up to it, I’d like to talk with him,” Officer McCallahan asked.Yami nodded. “I’ll give him the message.”The officer gently reminded Yami that he also needed to take Yugi’s statement. Yami went over and whispered in Yugi’s ear. The short tri-colored youth reluctantly stood up and left to speak with the officer. Before the officer left the room, he held a small yellow envelope out to him.Yami took it with a frown on his face.“What is this?” Yami asked.“It seems Mr. Wheeler had this in his possession and his son somehow found it. He refused to give it back to his father. That’s why he was beating him before you and your boyfriend arrived. The EMTs found it hidden in his jeans pocket. We thought Joey might like it back.”Yami continued frowning as the officer left the room. Turning around and walking back to the blonde’s bedside, Yami carefully opened the envelope. He stuck his hand in and felt for its contents. When his hand landed on it, he gasped. When he lifted the card out of the envelope, Yami’s eyes grew wide when he saw what it was. His eyes snapped back to Joey.“You…you found it?” he murmured.Suddenly realizing what this meant, Yami placed the card and envelope down beside Joey’s hand. He snatched his phone out of his pocket and quickly flipped through his contacts. When he landed on the one he wanted, Yami dialed it and brought it up to his ear.It ran only twice before someone picked up.“This had better be good.”Yami narrowed his gaze at no particular focus area.“Hello to you too, cousin,” Yami answered. There was a barely noticeable growl on the other side of the line.“You have ten seconds to tell me what you want.”“I’m going to need more time than that, cousin. Besides, it concerns something you’ve been looking for for quite some time now,” Yami hinted at.There was a noticeable pause hanging in the air that lasted all of a second and a half.“Where are you?”Yami smiled.“I’m at Domino General; third floor, room 305. And as to your next question, you’ll see when you get here.”With that said, Yami hung up his cell phone and put it back in his pocket. Yami sighed as he sat down in the unoccupied chair. He smiled softly when he looked at Joey. During the call, Joey had apparently taken the card gently into his hand and now had it lying flat on his chest between his hand and heart.Yami quietly stood so he could pick up his chair and put it closer. He reached out to place his hand gently over Joey’s.“I’m sorry you’ve been in so much pain and that no one’s believed you. I know you and he don’t see eye to eye, but it makes me curious. Why risk your life for something that means the world to him? I suppose that’ll be a good question for him to ask after you wake up,” Yami said.He stood up momentarily to gently hug his best friend before sitting back down.“I’m sorry none of us have been there for you, Joey. But we’re here now. And we’re not going anywhere,” Yami vowed.END OF CHAPTER ONEAuthor's Note: Decided in addition to my other abused!Joey and vampire!Kaiba, that I would try a human!Kaiba.
