And everybody, thank you thank you THANK YOU for your reviews & opinions!!!!! I love hearing what you think, and I do appreciate constructive criticism. Now it remains to be seen whether or not Yami can make Yugi stand up for himself - by himself.
Disclaimer: No, damnit, they're not mine. If they were, Yugi would be asleep on my lap instead of Harvey (aka Harvey the Wonder Hamster.......)

"Coming Out of the Dark"
Yami, the former pharaoh and millennium spirit, was bored out of his mind. Not to mention lonely, nervous and more than a little jealous. Tonight was the night of the Welcome Back Dance, and Yugi had gone with his old friend Tea Gardiner. Yami had decided to stay home, give his little one some privacy, but now he felt uneasy about it. Tea had changed, and not for the better, since their return from Battle City. Yami couldn't put his finger on it, but there was something about her that he very much didn't like anymore. He sighed, leaning his chin on his hands and watching the rain that had started not long after Yugi had left. He wished he could have been the one to go with Yugi, could have been the one to dance with him. His aibou was a very cute little dancer, although he didn't know it. Yami longed to be the one to hold him when the music slowed, feeling his little one snuggle close and nestle his head on his shoulder ---- Ra, what he wouldn't have given to have his little angel in his arms right now, to feel those petal-soft lips crushed against his, feel his small one tremble in his embrace. Oh well. He hoped Yugi was having fun at the dance, though. If the little hikari really wanted to be with Tea, then Yami would just have to accept it. As far as he was concerned, moving heaven and earth was not an unreasonable request if it made Yugi happy. He had to smile, thinking of how buoyant and nervous Yugi had been when he'd left. It was, after all, his first real date, with someone he'd had a crush on for so long.
"I can't believe she said she'd go with me, Yami!" Yugi had exclaimed. "Do you think she'll like the flowers?"
"She'll love them, aibou," Yami had said, managing to hide his own breaking heart very well.
Yugi's grandfather kissed his cheek. "Have a good time, now."
"Thanks, Ji-chan, I will---" Yugi lookt tht them, then abruptly blushed. "Bye. See you at eleven!"

Yugi, meanwhile, had already left the school and made his way to the park near the Game Shop. He collapsed in the darkness amid some trees, ignoring the icy rain, and dissolved into sobs, not bothering to muffle them since no one was around to hear him. He couldn't face going back home, not now. He'd have to hide out here in the dark and cold and wet for almost two and a half more hours, until he was expected back, so nobody would think anything. Helpless under a fresh onslaught of tears, he sobbed harder, his small body quaking. It had turned into one of the worst nights of his life. Tea had more or less ignored him once they got to the school, abandoning him altogether halfway through the first song. He had spent the next half-hour or so huddled against the wall of of the cafeteria, trying to avoid being stepped on or knocked down. He had finally fled altogether when the DJ played the first slow song, intending to hide out in the art annex a few hundred feet away to collect his wits and figure out what to do. However, the moment he'd stepped outside he'd been greeted with a horrible sight - Tea and some guy he didn't recognize standing right outside the doors, kissing.
"T-Tea?" he'd exclaimed. "I -- you --- I thought we----"
"You thought I actually wanted to be with you?!" she'd snorted. "Get real, Yugi! Nobody wants to be with you. You're nothing but a whiny, worthless little loser. Nobody in their right mind would ever want to be with you. Why don't you just go throw your worthless, whiny little ass off a bridge so nobody has to be burdened with it anymore." She'd looked back at the guy. "Ignore the little baby, Darryl. He's going to run off and cry now---" With that, she'd started sucking his face again.
Yugi knew he should have said something - anything - but words had totally failed him. He hadn't run, but he'd finally walked back into the cafeteria, certain everyone was pointing at him and laughing. Once he was well out of sight of the others, he'd run. It had started raining as he'd left the building the second time, but he'd hardly noticed. He didn't know how he was going to be able to face anyone on Monday. All at once, throwing himself off of a bridge didn't seem like such a bad idea. He looked up for a moment, his dripping bangs falling over his face, then buried his head on his knees again, crying. She was right. He was just a burden on all his friends. They probably only put with him because they felt sorry for him. And nobody would ever love him. Ever. Who on earth would want to? Except maybe Yami ---- ?
Yami?
"YO! What are we doing tonight!"
A voice nearby made him look up with a little gasp of terror. About thirty feet away, under the partial roof of a bike shelter, were six or seven harsh-looking older boys, standing around talking. Yugi couldn't get away without being seen. Terrified, he huddled further into the shadows, shaking, praying they wouldn't see him-----

Meanwhile, back at the dance, Joey was getting a soda when he happened to look around and see Tea hanging all over the captain of the boys' baseball team.
"Tea, what --- I thought you were here with Yugi!" he exclaimed.
"Oh, he --- wasn't feeling well," Tea said dismissively, while the guy she was with cracked his knuckles threateningly in Joey's direction. Joey bristled and started to take a step forward, but before he could, Ryou caught up with him, grabbing his arm.
"Joey, have you seen Yugi?" he said. "I can't find him anywhere."
"Oh, he wasn't feeling well. He probably went home or something," Tea said, leading the other guy away by the arm. Finally. She was in with the cool people now. No more hanging around with a bunch of freaks and losers. She had so outgrown them by now. She couldn't believe how silly she'd been, chasing around some dumb island in some silly card game----
"That little---" Joey started after them. This time Tristian caught him.
"Not now, dummy. We have to find Yugi," he said.
"Yugi Mutou? Your cute little friend with all that spiky hair?" The speaker was a blonde they knew only as Dawn. "Jada said she saw him leave about twenty minutes ago. She said he looked kind of freaked out." As she spoke, a girl of about Yugi's own height with waist-length black hair came over.
"Have you---" she started, then broke off, eyes wide. "What the -- DARRYL, YOU SCUMBAG! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING TOUCHING THAT GARDNIER BITCH?!"
"What?!" Dawn looked around. "Oh my God---"
"C'mon---" Ryou said, hauling at Joey. "We have to find Yugi!"

Yami, meanwhile, was glaring at a carton of Neapolitan ice cream. Someone - probably Yugi - had eaten all the chocolate and all that was left was vanilla and strawberry. He wished Mutou-san would just buy plain cartons. He put it back in the freezer, shut the door, and opened the refrigerator, hoping there was still some chocolate pudding left. All at once, though, he gave a violent start, banging his head on the underside of one of the shelves.
"Yami? Are you okay?" Solomon looked around.
"I'll be back---" Yami shut the refrigerator and ran for the door.
"Where are you going?" Solomon started after him. "It's raining!"
"Wait here!" Yami inadvertently slammed the door in Solomon's face. He hadn't had his mental link with Yugi blocked, but he hadn't been monitoring it either, out of respect for his aibou's privacy. However, the sudden jolt of emotional anguish and sheer terror he'd felt through it had nearly brought him to his knees. He ran down the stairs and let himself out the front door of the shop, looking around frantically as he tried to get a fix on where exactly Yugi was. The park! He ran across the street and the couple of blocks to the park, hoping he wasn't already too late......
~*~
"Listen!" one of the older boys said. "There's something over there in those trees!"
Yugi huddled behind the trunk as much as he could, shaking.
"Ah, leave it. It's probably a dog or something," one of the others said.
"Yeah, well, I think we should find out for sure," the first one said, starting over.
"Come on, dumbass. We're going to miss the movie!" Another of his friends pulled him away. Reluctantly, he followed the others. Yugi huddled there a moment more until they were out of sight, then scrambled to his feet and started to make a run for it - only to collide with Yami.
"Aibou!" Yami hugged him. "Aibou, are you hurt? What happened?" He held Yugi tighter as his little one broke down sobbing again, fear and relief and heartbreak rendering him mostly hysterical. Before he could try to ask the little hikari what was wrong, a green-jacketed torpedo crashed into them, knocking them both to the ground. Yugi screamed. He landed hard on top of Yami, his knee digging into the dark spirit's diaphragm and knocking the wind out of him.
"Yuge! Are you all right?!" Joey exclaimed, grabbing Yugi by the shoulders and shaking him none too gently.
"Joey---" Yami tried to say, but right at that moment, Ryou tripped over him, landing across him. Tristian managed to stop just short of the carnage.
"Sorry---" Ryou said.
The second scare hadn't done anything for Yugi's frayed nerves; he was still sobbing hysterically. Joey heistated a moment, then pulled his frined into a bone-crushing hug. "Hey, Yuge, take it easy, it's only us," he said.
Yugi couldn't pull himself together enough to reply.
"Hadn't we better get out of this rain?" Ryou finally said.
