I paced across the floor and sighed to myself. The voice on the other end of the line on my cell phone droned on and on. I scowled at the mirror. The school’s boy’s restroom wasn’t the place to conduct a meeting via the phone. I didn’t even call this meeting in the first place. I shifted my weight from one foot to the other in a slight dance. If this call lasted any longer, I was just going to have to be rude. Finally a came break in the monotonous droning.
“Mr. Kaiba, I think you were trying to say something.?”
“That was forty-five minutes ago. I have a situation that requires my immediate attention, so if you will excuse me, I must go.” I clicked off the cell before another ignoramus could drag me in to the meeting. I stepped into the cubicle and snapped the door shut. As I slid the lock to, the damned phone rang again..” I sighed again and answered the phone. I was ready to snapthe the idiot who’d called me after I’d made it clear that I was finished with the phone meeting.
“Hello, Seto Kaiba.” The tone of my voice cut abruptly off as I heard the voice of my little brother, Mokuba. He sounded really down.
“Seto, can you call my school, I’m sick. I tried to make it to school, but I had to have the car stop when I started to throw up. Don’t worry, I got out of the car before I did.”
Realizing it was only Mokuba, I took care of the business I’d entered the cubicle to tend to. Mokuba protested slightly, but didn’t seem to upset by it. When I exited, I walked to the sink to wash my hands. I noticed Joey Wheeler enter and sling his bag down. He looked like hell, and his brown eyes gave me a “Don’t start with me look”. I ignored him as he stumbled into one of the stalls. I stuck around, waiting on him. I knew I was already way late for first class, as he was too, so I thought it would be okay for us to walk together. I didn’t pay attention to what was going on until I saw the door open again.
Joey looked like shit. His face was pale, and his eyes had deep, dark rings around them. He shoved past me and washed his hands in the sink. He turned away from the sink and pitched forward. I leapt forward and caught him. His face was cold and clammy, and so were his hands. My briefcase was close to me and I reached to pull it closer. I decided while I was waiting, to just cut today. Mokuba was sick, so I had a good excuse. He leaned weakly on me, his hand gripping my arm.
“Kaiba? Why did you catch me?”
“I couldn’t let you splatter your brains on the floor, you idiot dog. What’s wrong with you?”
“Nothing. Leave me alone.” Joey tried standing, but failed the attempt. I wrapped my arm around him, giving him some support. I hate this guy, but I don’t like to see him like this. I don’t like to see anyone sick.
“Joey, there has to be something wrong with you. You are weak, you look like shit. I’m not moving till you tell me what’s wrong.”
“I had a rough weekend, now LET ME UP!” I let him go, and he tried to stand, only drawing him closer to me. I reached down and opened my briefcase. I took out my lunch, seeing how as soon as I got the mutt out of my way, I was going to leave school. I took out the pita bread sandwich and held it to his lips.
“Take a bite, Joey.” He tentatively took a bite. he slowly chewed the food as I pulled out the bottle of juice that was always packed in my lunch. I opened the bottle and tipped it up to his lips. He took a slow swallow. The color in his cheeks began to return. “When is the last time you ate?”
“Friday.”
“Joey, that was three days ago. You mean to tell me the last time you ate was here at schooll Friday?”
“Yeah, you got a problem with that?”
“Well, looking at you, yes.”
“Well I did eat peanut butted a d a few other things, but I don’t know why you need to know that. I don’t even know why you ain’t being an asshole to me.”
“Because I don’t want to be blamed for you being sick. If you had hurt yourself while I was in here, they’d blame me.”
“So you are only saving your skin by doing this?”
“Don’t twist my words. I am also doing this for you.” I handed him the food and the bottle of juice. I watched him eat, surprised he wasn’t eating as he normally did. One risked their life by reaching around Joey while he was eating. He was eating slowly. “Are you afraid of getting sick if you eat too fast?”
“Well, duh. Not only that, this is too good to rush.” He smiled softly. A warmth shown in his brown eyes. His tough guy wall was beginning to crumble. I noticed soft golden flecks in his eyes.
“Do you feel like staying here at school. I have to leave because Mokuba’s sick, but I will give you a ride anywhere you’d like to go.”
He sat and thought for a few minutes. He suddenly handed me the food and the juice and flew into a cubicle, I heard him gagging violently. I peeked in and saw him leaning over the stool. My cell phone began to ring again and I answered it.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Kaiba, thank goodness. We’ve been looking for you. Your housekeeper called and said Mokuba’s at home sick, and is ag fog for you. I have already marked you absent for the day. Have you seen Joey Wheeler?”
I breathed a short sigh of relief. It was no one from work. I looked over at Joey a. H. He looked like he was trying to hold back from vomiting again.
“I’m looking right at him. Why?”
“The lady who lives next door to him saw him sneaking out and saw that he looked sick. She tried to get him to stay with him, but he was afraid his dad would look for him.”
“Ah, and he thought he’d be safer at school?”
“I guess.” Joey could no longer hold back, and began to vomit again. “Oh! Mr. Kaiba, get him home. He doesn’t need to be at school when he’s like that.”
“Very well.” I sighed in mock frustration.
“Thanks. Should I call her back and tell her to expect him?”
“No, I will let him make the decision on where to go.”
“That works. Have a nice day.”
I shut the phone off. Joey had emptied his stomach and was washing his face at the s Th The paleness was back in his cheeks. He moved to pick up his bag.
I gathered up my things and headed to the door. I heard him slowly walking behind me. I turned to him and asked him if he wanted to go anywhere.
“You don’t understand Kaiba, I’m safer here than anywhere.”
“That’s where you are wrong, my little dog. I know of a few places where your father has no access to. This school isn’t one of them.”
I led him out of the bathroom, and through the ha We We stepped out of the building and towards my waiting car. He paused outside the door and looked in.
“I am not going to hurt you. Get in and tell me where you’d like to go, unless you want to go where I know you’ll be safe.”
Joey looked up then bolted into the car. Behind the limo, I noticed a beat up old car creeping up. I activated the intercom switch and told the driver to get away and use evasive tactics if the car followed. Joey was crouched low in the floorboards, his whole body quaking in fear.
