Author's Notes - Final chapter on this little side track. When I set out writing this, I wanted to make it so that it would fit into the current universe without
disrupting too much. This chapter is for that. Hope you all enjoy . . .
And for those of you waiting for the sequel to 'Giving In', which is entitled 'Going On' . . . it should be up within a week, if my muses keep working with
me on it. You will find it much changed from what it was, I think.
Chapter 5 - Fulfillment
Yugi sat up, gasping, alone in the darkened room.
"Yami!" he called, his voice panicked. In response, his other was suddenly there, wrapping ghostly arms around him.
"I'm right here, love," Yami whispered. "What is wrong?"
Yugi sagged, his breath hitching in his chest as he fought back the panic that had engulfed him.
"When I woke up alone . . . gods, I thought it was all a dream . . ." He turned in the ghostly arms, shivering at the contact but not pulling away. "It wasn't a
dream, was it?" he murmured hoarsely. Crimson eyes met amethyst solemnly before Yami shook his head, leaning down for a barely felt kiss before pulling
back.
"No, my aibou . . . no dream," he replied quietly. "But when you fell asleep, you're soul automatically awoke here, in your own body." He sighed. "There
is no way for you to remain with me in my soul room when you are unconscious young one. That is the way it is." He stood slowly, pacing the room for a
moment before coming to rest beside the window, crimson eyes regarding the darkness outside sadly. "Only in our soul rooms can we be anything to each
other . . ."
Yugi was surprised at the utter desolation in his yami's voice. Rising from the bed, he approached the spirit slowly, moving to stand in front of the solemn
spirit.
"You don't . . . regret it . . . do you?" he asked quietly. Crimson eyes widened slightly before they darkened in understanding.
"I could never regret that, aibou," he murmured, one ghostly hand caressing his cheek lovingly. "I love you with every fibre of my being. But . . . it can
never be real . . . not in the sense that your world would accept." He sighed again, a deep breath that spoke volumes. "Only in our minds can anything
happen between us . . . and I cannot help but feel that I will be holding you back from all that life has to offer you."
"Yami . . . I could not consider it life without you," Yugi replied softly. "No matter if anything physical between us is confined to our soul rooms or not . .
. I could no more stop loving you than I could stop breathing." He held a hand to his heart, amethyst eyes looking up at his yami solemnly. "If I died
tomorrow, Yami . . . at least I could die happy, knowing that I got to be with you, just once." Crimson eyes softened at the sentiment before transparent
arms enfolded him in their cool embrace once again. Yugi raised his own arms, bracketing his dark within his arms in a vague hug that was more gesture
than reality, but it was enough.
"You should sleep, aibou," Yami murmured after several moments. "Although we've been in my soul room for a good amount of time, you still require
rest." He stepped back, smiling as he went through Yugi's upraised arms. "I will stay beside you . . . I have done so often in the past." Yugi looked at him
curiously, even as he stripped down to his boxers and climbed into bed.
"You've watched me sleep before?" Yami nodded.
"It was . . . one of the few times that I could watch you and know that I had no worry of you nor any of our friends seeing," the spirit murmured, settling
onto the bed next to him. He sighed as Yugi cuddled closer, amethyst eyes closing wearily as slumber drifted in to claim him.
"I love you, Yami . . ." Yugi whispered. "Promise . . . you'll never leave me?" Yami smiled, brushing a brief, ghostly kiss over one pale cheek before
replying.
"I will never willingly leave you, aibou. I love you far too much," he replied softly. There was no response . . . Yugi was already fast asleep, a soft smile
curving the delicate features. Chuckling lightly, Yami settled in next to the sleeping youth, watching over his hikari's peaceful slumber, his heart content.
A slight cough from the door caught his attention, crn eyn eyes drifting over to meet the serious lavender gaze of Marik, who stood just outside the door, a
tray of food balanced precariously on one hip. He raised himself up on one ghostly elbow, studying the blonde seriously as the slim figure moved into the
room, setting the tray down on the desk before settling into the chair nearby.
"How is he?" Marik asked quietly. Yami sighed, transparent fingers trailing lightly over Yugi's face before replying.
"Better, I think," Yami replied just as quietly. "I . . . take it that you had something to do with him coming after me in my soul room?" The young Egyptian
nodded. "Thank you. I was . . . not aware that he was well."
"You should never cut your hikari off like that, Pharaoh," Marik chided gently. "The two of you are bound together by fate . . . and love. You need each
other . . . one without the other is not whole." Crimson eyes closed wearily for a moment, another sigh escaping the slim form before he replied.
"I thought that he was dead, Marik," he said finally. "I . . . this time is still so strange to me. Such an occurrence in my time would have meant death . . .
this thing they call medicine must be miraculous indeed to have returned my aibou to me." He shook his head, smiling ruefully. "It was silly of me to
underestimate things . . ."
"Yes, it was," Marik agreed, and then grinned when Yami glared at him. "However, things are right between the two of you now, and that is all that matters,
yes?" Yami smiled for a moment, before the smile dimmed, fading out entirely as he glanced down at his sleeping aibou again. "Things . . . are right
between you, aren't they?" Marik asked, seeing the look.
"Between us, yes," Yami answered finally. "But what kind of life can he have with me? I am nothing more than a spirit . . . an echo trapped within an
ancient puzzle." Crimson eyes regarded the sleeping youth solemnly. "I feel like I will be holding him back." He was surprised to look up and find Marik
smiling.
"Yami . . . perhaps you should take a look at that scroll that I gave you now," Marik said, turning and unrolling the scroll from where it had remained after
he brought it into the room with him. In response, Yami rose from the bed silently, coming to stand over the blonde's shoulder, reading the scroll quietly as
it rested in the tanned hands.
"Marik . . . is this . . . what I think it is?" he asked finally. Marik nodded.
"Yes . . . my sister found it in the ancient archives my family has maintained for you. A spell to return you to life . . . at the appropriate time."
"The appropriate time?" Yami replied, his voice still mystified despite his best efforts. "What . . . or rather, when . . . is that?"
"You must regain your memories first, Pharaoh," Marik murmured. "There is still much ahead of you and your hikari. Your love will keep each other strong
. . . but it is best if you keep it hidden." He arose from the chair slowly. "I must leave . . . my sister will already be worrying that I have not called her as of
yet." He bowed to Yami and slid from the room, leaving Yami to stare after him in shock . . . and gratitude.
Once Marik was gone, he turned to the window, staring out into the deepening evening sky with a sense of hope for the first time in far too long.
"Thank you, Marik Ishtar," he whispered. "You have given me hope. Whatever may come . . . I will not leave his side." He remained that way for a long
time before turning back to his sleeping aibou.
"I will never fail you again, my love," he murmureAnd And I will never cease to love you." Sighing, he settled down beside Yugi once again, content in the
knowledge that, no matter what appeared on the outside, he and Yugi belonged to each other . . . forever.
