This is what happens when I write at work…
Chapter 1
Ryou sat in
the common room, trying to focus on the movie droning on the television. He pretty much had the room to himself; a
couple of guys were playing ping-pong, but everyone else had gone to the rec
room to shoot pool. Pool was a game
lost on him and the other guys just got pissed at his inability, so sitting
around watching bad movies was a more viable option.
He’d been
here for almost six months now. Almost
six months in this hellhole. Almost six
months of the same puke green brick walls, stark décor, and uncomfortable cheap
furniture. Almost six months of virtual
isolation. He missed the outside world
and his freedom. Ryou stood up went to
the window, looking outside at the exercise yard surrounded by the high fencing
topped with razor wire. He hated having
to see the world through windows covered with heavy metal screens. He missed being able to move around without
first gaining someone’s permission.
Here every door was locked and he had no key.
Ryou sighed
heavily and went back to the couch to continue to stare blankly at the
television. He needed to get out of
here soon before he really did become crazy, but it was too much to hope
for. He had at least three months of
safety to himself and others to achieve before they would consider
discharge. So for now he was trapped
with people telling him when to eat, when to sleep, when to shit, and when to
breathe. He just needed to stay
focused, finish his time and try to pick up the pieces of his life.
A scream
pierced through the quiet of the mostly empty unit, piquing Ryou’s
curiosity. Screams were not unusual,
but the pitch was one he was unfamiliar with.
Ah, must’ve been a new admittance.
“Fucking
untie me before I rip off your fucking head!
I’m not fucking staying in this shithole!”
“Doesn’t
look like you’re in the position to do much of anything and doesn’t look like
you have much of a choice. So son, you
can calm down and we can let you out, or we can just move you ourselves and
strap you to a bed. It’s your call.”
“I’m not
your son! And you won’t fucking touch
me!” The voice sneered causing Ryou to
smile a bit; this one was feisty. “Suck
my dick!”
“Alright, you
made your choice, my man.” The voice of
the admitting staff was filled with feigned sadness.
Ryou knew
that the tone of the staff’s voice wasn’t genuine; these sadistic fucks hoped
you wanted to fight. As if on cue the
challenge began. The new admit starting
screaming like a banshee and Ryou could hear him fighting against the
restraints that secured him to the gurney.
The restraints that the EMT’s used on the ambulance transport were
almost laughably inefficient for dealing with the sort that usually came to a
place like this. Ryou had to resist the
temptation to go to the doorway and watch the spectacle unfold, but he didn’t
want to make things any worse for himself.
He’d been walking on thin ice lately as it was. He turned up the volume on the television to
drown out the chaos in the hallway and sat smiling; nothing was unusual around
here, this was just another day in lock up.
Before long
the person responsible for keeping track of the residents stuck her head in and
smiled at him warmly. She was one of
Ryou’s favorites; she treated him like a person instead of just another sick
freak.
“Hey, Ryou,
I’m sorry but it’s in room’s time now.”
“Okay, I’m
going.”
“Just
respect the new guys privacy going by, he’s having a rough time.”
He nodded
and smiled back at her before clicking off the television and standing up. The day was dragging as it was and it wasn’t
going to go by any quicker in his room.
He started down the hall and couldn’t resist discreetly peeking in on
the new guy. He casually glanced once
he got past the staff person sitting in the doorway monitoring him while he was
in restraints. After the fight Ryou
heard earlier it was no surprise this guy had been put in. As soon as he set eyes on the teen laying
strapped to the bed the new guy’s head shot up and a pair of piercing eyes met
his. The new guys mouth curled into a
smirk and he stared at him knowingly.
Ryou’s breath caught in his throat at the strange familiarity and exotic
beauty of the teen on the bed. He was
splayed on his stomach, arms and legs secured to the four corners of the bed
with thick leather cuffs and black straps.
The new guy swung his eyes to the staff person stationed in front of him
and just stared, trying to unnerve him.
Ryou
continued down to his room, closing the door before flopping down on the
bed. He found himself unsettled by the
new guy. When those piercing eyes met
his for that brief moment he felt a charge, a connection that affected him to
the core. He saw that smirk again and
realized that that face would always be in his memory. He smiled to himself, feeling almost
giddy. Things were going to be getting
interesting- he could feel it.
The new
guy’s name was Bakura and he was truly a wild man. In the week since he’d come he was always shaking things up, and
due to this was going into restraints almost daily. He seemed to enjoy the fight in some perverse way, even though he
always lost. He could also fight meds
like a pro, and the doctors were challenged to find doses that would subdue him
without killing him. Despite all this,
people really took to him. The staff
was amused by his antics and his twisted sense of humor, and even his blatant
hatred of them. The other residents
were impressed somewhat with his recklessness.
Ryou, on
the other hand, always kept to himself.
He was a quiet and soft spoken and almost painfully polite. He had been in the system for so long he was
tired of fighting it. He just wanted to
do his time, fake a sense of positive mental health, and move on. He was reading in the common room, needing a
change of scenery from the stark walls of his room, when he felt someone plop
down on the couch next to him. He kept
his eyes focused on the print, trying to mind his own business.
“Good
book?”
Ryou looked
up at the sound of the familiar voice and was surprised to see Bakura not only
sitting next to him, but actually talking to him. Ryou managed a small smile and nodded before returning his eyes
to the page.
“What’s it
about?”
Ryou looked
up at the older teen, unable to mask his distrust. “I’m sorry, I really don’t mean to be rude, but can I help you
with something? If not I’d like to get
back to my book.”
Bakura
smirked, looking pleased with himself, “If you want me to piss off, just tell
me.”
Ryou
shrugged and maintained eye contact, refusing to back down to any
challenge. One thing he learned in
these places is never show weakness.
“It’s about this guy who kills housewives, chops them up and puts them
in brownies.”
“My kind of
book.” Bakura looked at Ryou, sizing
him up. “So, what are you in for?”
Ryou
sighed, knowing he wasn’t getting back to his book anytime soon, not if new guy
wanted to talk. “Do you want my version
or theirs?”
“Let’s
start with theirs.” Bakura’s eyes lit
up; he liked this kid.
“Major
Depressive Disorder, Recurrent, Severe Without Psychotic Features and
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Chronic.”
He rattled off the diagnosis that has followed him around from placement
to placement for years. Bakura was
waiting patiently for Ryou to continue with his own version. “And I, um, got dealt a bad hand and they
don’t like how I deal with it. If they
just left me alone, I’d be fine.
Bakura
reached out and grabbed the younger teen by the wrist. Ryou was surprised at how strong the new guy
was and realized quickly that resistance was futile. He watched as Bakura pushed up the cuff of his long sleeved shirt
and looked at the stark white scar tissue running across his wrist. Bakura shook his head, but didn’t look surprised.
“You need
to cut that shit out. Only losers
quit. Are you a loser?”
“That’s
none of your business!” Bakura smirked
at how quickly this kid dropped his almost demure composure. “What are you in for?”
“Well, the
latest diagnosis is Bipolar Disorder, most recent episode hypomanic, and
Oppositional Defiant Disorder.”
Ryou
smirked, “The latest diagnosis?”
“They just
can’t seem to get it right.” Bakura
winked slyly and laughed, “it’s good to keep them on their toes.”
“So what’s your version?”
“I’m bored
and this is better than living on the streets.”
Ryou found
it easy to laugh with the older teen and was surprised to find himself so at
ease. He had always made it a point to
not get involved with any of his peers.
He’d been burnt too many times before and was just tired of the games
that went on in places like this. He
didn’t need friends and would rather beat off than get involved with anyone
sexually. He had enough baggage to
carry around as it was.
Bakura held
out his hand. “I’m Bakura.”
“Ryou.” He accepted the extended hand and was
surprised how warm it felt in his. He
felt butterflies in his stomach at the touch.
He tried to pull away but Bakura held fast. He lifted the hand to his lips and kissed it gently, arcing an eyebrow
as if to challenge.
“You and I
are going to get along just fine.”
A/N: At first this
played through in my head as a one shot, then as it started to unfold I
realized it was going to be more complicated than that. So I decided to break it up into smaller
chapters to get it to be a little easier to manage. I hope this works well.
So please, tell me what you think.
This is a new endeavor for me and I’d like to know how it’s being
received.
